Oh for sure. pricy indeed, but getting a lot of use here. like ya say though, RBass is only about 30quid on average these days, and nothing really truly replaces the MaxxBass tech in how it was implemented(lots of tools that do similar things in concept, but don't implement it as well IMO), so if you don't have hang ups about Waves and their policies, it's worth grabbingrevvy wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 9:36 am My only point was that in a thread seeking free alternatives to a plug-in that currently costs $29 (and doesn’t add sub harmonics), many of the suggestions are way off base (pun intended).
Yes, although apparently v pricey, Root One does seem to have an interesting feature set beyond just subs (just gone to read the SOS review, not actually tried it).

"I believe there's a video by Worrall where he comes up with very similar results by building a plugin chain. So that you can ball park your own plugin chain."
They meant that video:
Saturn 2 in multiband mode.
"I prefer the transformer model for bass."
"I’m always a recovering RBass user"
And other alternatives from above:
Unfiltered audio bass - they mint is pretty close, but can sound too "synthetic" at times.
Leapwing Audio RootOne "is magnificient"
Acustica’s Fire the Bass "has replaced my RBass, now I’m effectively Waves free and sounding better in the bottom than I was!"

After not using any Waves plugins for quite awhile now, I've decided I won't install Waves Central on my new studio PC.
The only thing I might occasionally miss is RBass, so I'm hunting for a solid alternative. I've just tried to replicate its effect on a stock kickdrum with the default setting at 32hZ - and I simply couldn't replicate it with any other plugin. Some findings...
Black Salt Audio - Low Control: Meh
2B Played - LowEnd Friend: Great sound and control set. I will be installing this, but it's not RBass
BOOM Library - Enforcer: Powerful but much more tuned sub-generator type
ReFuse - Lowender: Best alternative to LoAir in my opinion, so nothing like RBass
Voxengo LF Max Punch: Hidden gem, super powerful, does sub-octave plus upper harmonics. I still couldn't get in the ballpark of RBass but maybe I just need to spend more time on it.
To be honest, probably the closest I got was UAD Pultec low boost/cut while pushing the input.
Incidentally I did stumble on a setting in Wavesfactory SPECTRE that sounded utterly stellar on that kickdrum
I'll check out Fire the Bass.

OK, Fire the Bass was definitely not it.
But I can confirm Denise Audio Bass XXL is as close as it gets to RBass outside of Waves - and in many scenarios I thought it sounded better. I think there's some phase cancellation happening in the (minimum phase) crossovers of RBass that messes with the low mids - which is actually part of its signature sound. Sounds good for certain things like it can de-box a kickdrum while adding thump - and if you're working in mono (bass/kicks, generally) you can compensate for it with an EQ if you want. However, Bass XXL has linear phase crossovers I think, so the dry blend has less of that phasey low mid dip of RBASS.
Plus it has oversampling and several more controls to fine tune the effect.
I think I've found a winner.
Doesn't fulfill the OP's quest for a FREE alternative, but it is THE alternative

WOK Bass Plus 32Bit - donations accepted http://wokwave.com/old-plugins/html/bass_enhancer.htmlVST Small Speaker Bass Enhancer is a small plug-in that uses a technology called phantom fundamental which was already known to pipe organ builder hundreds of years ago. Psychoacoustics shows, that a fundamental component can be heard even if it is just represented by its harmonics. Give VST Small Speaker Bass Enhancer a try to fully assess its capabilities
