In defense of DiscoDSP, they did update the code and framework so this can be used on the latest operating systems and DAWs, they added MIDI Learn, they added hi-res, skinnable graphics. They added built in preset/bank management.

I appreciate what they've done to keep this synth going.

This open source project should have been carry on by the surge team.

It's open source. It can be if they want to.

Then why does their web site say "The OB-Xd is a synthesizer that has been designed to recreate the sound and behavior of the Oberheim OB-X."
Marketing.

But then, Obxd was meant to recreate the OB-X. IIRC, the original developer worked a lot with sound files to compare. But, that's, of course, no substitute for having the real machine to compare.

Actually, I think Obxd's filter is quite neat. Haven't tried it for a while though.

So many good coding prospects for the Surge Team, but they chose a sampler as the next priority.

That will be a wonderful product 8) !!! 8) I believe they will always welcome skilled and cheerful coders to grow their team

Does anyone have a link to download the last Datsounds version of ob-xd? I have a lot of old sessions with it and if I install the DiscoDSP version it installs it as a new plug-in and I can't recover/convert any of the sounds. I've been trying to look for the last Datsounds version and it seems to be memory-holed into oblivion and stealth-replaced with DiscoDSP's version.

you can pm Datsounds ,it will be nice if his version(binary) is permanently available somewhere (GitHub?)

Yet you continue to profit off of the work that was primarily done by open source projects in the first place. I would like to remind you that both Obxd and OPL would not exist if 2dat and bsutherland did not make it in the first place. Taking from open source projects and commercialising is one thing and since it is permitted in Open Source, i am not against it but to be completely ungrateful and trash it is another.

I’m also sure all those banks and skins that were made by kvr members also would not exist if the synth wasn’t free and open source. I can pretty much confirm that no one made those patches and skins thinking “i’m gonna create this free preset for discoDSP’s commercial product”. Most of them were made out of love for an open source/free plugin.
The GPL allows commercialisation of their version of Obxd, but the GPL *requires* that it be open source and under GPL. My understanding of the GPL is that no derivative product can be closed source, it is in fact the entire reason for the GPL. So unless Obxd was dual licensed at the time, and discoDSP acquired a copy under the other, non-GPL license (which is, I suppose, what is claimed here under this quote: "The original author 2Dat granted discoDSP a OB-Xd private use license on December 2022.", although "private use license" could cover pretty much anything and doesn't necessarily grant commercialisation usage), they simply could not turn their version closed source. Only the original author is allowed to dual license it (the versions that were released under GPL can still be forked), no other author of a GPL'd derivative code is allowed to do this.
An example of a synth that is in this exact case is Vital : Matt Tytel released the original source code under GPLv3, but derivative versions are closed source. It's possible because he is the original author.

note: discoDSP is right that the GPL license applies only to the code. AFAIK they retain the rights to the artistic works/assets, images and presets and they aren't obliged to provide those.

If 2DaT as the sole owner transfered his copyright of the code to discoDSP, it is entirely possible to turn GPL into a commercial product, because then discoDSP becomes the sole owner of the code from the point of the agreement onward, is my understanding. The code prior to that point is of course open source under GPL and can be further forked and modified etc.

Just FYI y'all, most of these new parameters were already there ages ago, as automatable parameters without a GUI control. :)

Nice that they finally have a GUI representation (and that LFO tempo sync finally works. EDIT: Hold that thought!).

Bugs:

LFO tempo sync doesn't work when transport is not running.
Tooltip for LFO Rate doesn't show a note value in tempo sync mode.
Can't really hear anything happening when Push button is pressed, it's like it's not really working. It should be a pretty big difference (it is in Surge's OB-Xd filter implementation).
