Hi all,
What can cause sound to break up (moderately, and intermittently) during project playback, in TW12? Could it be caused by plugins, overloading my CPU? (The rendered project sounds okay.) Many thanks.

I can't say for sure, but it definitely sounds like it. Crackling during playback but not during recording is usually the processor getting pegged pretty hard. The indicator is in the upper right corner area of the playback window--look for the little tachometer next to "100" gauge. If that starts hitting 30% or so, you can expect crackling.
As you've discovered, though, this usually doesn't have an effect on recording quality. You can live with it--but if you're being distracted by the crackling during mixing, it will prevent you from working more effectively: as you've guessed, your ears don't appreciate crackling when listening for details!
If that's the case, you should look into freezing tracks (especially any complex submixes or tracks with a ton of plugins) or bouncing tracks you're happy with so you can disable the plugins.
If you're getting crackling when recording live inputs, I'd check into that Behringer interface. Some do have a tendency to crackle especially when recording; however, what you described sounds more like a processor getting cranky about a lot of heavy lifting.

Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

Many thanks for the helpful tips, @Watchful. I've never heard crackling, per se. But yes, that CPU meter at top right hits 46 occasionally. (I never noticed that meter before you mentioned it!)

I'm using tw 12.5 on mac so i don't know if this is any help for you. For me when using core audio driver the sound started crackling, cpu usage skyrocketed and then the audio got muted constantly like every 2 minutes or so. Every time I had to change the audio buffer size from audio setup to get the sound back. I had to run the core audio with latencies high as 30ms. After I created an aggregate device from mac's audio midi setup, i havent had any issues running tw12.5 with about 13ms latency and the drops disappeared completely
