Strange. I'm subscribed and I didn't receive anything. Nothing in junkmail folder, either.pdxindy wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 11:04 pmThe email indicates an early adopter discount.masterhiggins wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 10:59 pmThey didn't do an intro price for Virta when it came out. i was only speculating that since it'll be an early release that perhaps there will be an intro price but it doesn't matter to me. i'm going to grab it regardless. it's right up my alley and sounds great. i'm happy to support mardona's work.masterhiggins wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 10:59 pmThey didn't do an intro price for Virta when it came out. i suspect there won't be a sale on a brand new release though.. perhaps in summer or next black friday.

I just received the email today. Titled "Sumo update and thank you sale"masterhiggins wrote: Fri Dec 08, 2023 11:05 pmStrange. I'm subscribed and I didn't receive anything. Nothing in junkmail folder, either.
Here is one of the paragraphs:
"I’m working to get an “Early access” version out to you before the end of the year. I have some usability features I want to add to make it what I consider a complete 1.0 release but meanwhile, I know more than a few people who will be excited to play with it over the holidays. The unfinished features will be a few things like MIDI Learn, undo, more factory patches and so on. I’ll send out a complete list of near-term plans and you get to decide whether to wait or not. Early adopters will get a “thanks for trusting me to finish this” discount. A win-win, I hope. Price to be announced at release, and no funny business like a subscription, don't worry."

I recommend everyone interested to subscribe AGAIN to their newsletter. I’ve been onboard forever, but was not getting recent news. Resubbed, and got the latest missive.

I listened earlier today to You Tube's DataBroth's exploration of Sumu's beta and was less than impressed. I tried to convince myself that I felt some potential in it I wasn't hearing; that it was still in beta; and that DataBroth simply needed more time on it and might have just been having a less than optimal day.

tbh it seems like something I'd play around with for 7 hours without accomplishing any music creation.

Relax.
Madrona Labs attracts people that like less traditional forms of music and sounds, that does not mean that the thing won't be usefull to make sounds for songs
It's still early days, take some time to form your opinion.

While I've seen some cool play-through videos from DataBroth that helped sway me, I would not base my evaluation of a synth's capabilities solely on what he does in a session (which are unedited, right?). I'm still looking forward to seeing/hearing more--and maybe demoing if that's a thing.Borbolactic wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 2:41 am I listened earlier today to You Tube's DataBroth's exploration of Sumu's beta and was less than impressed. people leveled similar first take criticisms about absynth at various times but that synth became quite popular even with it's kind of atrocious interface. i've used it on a lot of tracks and it makes amazing sounds still. not saying SUMU is anything like absynth just that anything that's "weird" and focused on sound design in different ways than what's expected gets thrown into some genre that some people view as being quite narrow when really the capabilities of it are quite broad.
i think SUMO will find its niche and excel at lot's of things that people aren't expecting. i'm looking forward to it. will be an early adopter. been making some prep material with VUTU already.. in anticipation of SUMU.

If you’ve used Aalto and Kaivo, then you’ll be used to the workflow. ML does what they do very well, but they don’t deviate from it. I’d imagine Sumu will be popular with sound designers and West Coast synth fanatics.

Absolutely, hence my trying to convince myself of something of what you're talking about. It's like listening to all the presets that have init in them, like init01, init02, init03. Eventually, someone's going to change those inits to actual presets. Maybe DataBroth, and we'll see 'DataBroth' on one of its banks. And then we can cut an original album called, 'DataBrothRedIsForRecordingYoloVenusTheorySoundPackBenBlaBlaBla'.Dirtgrain wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 1:39 pmWhile I've seen some cool play-through videos from DataBroth that helped sway me, I would not base my evaluation of a synth's capabilities solely on what he does in a session (which are unedited, right?). But I'm still kind of bothered somehow with its limit of something like 64 partials per voice, such as if we 'compare' (so to speak) it with other additives with many more. But it could be a matter of how it's managing those partials versus the other additive synths. A bit of a mystery to me for now... But what I'm hearing seems to sound (perhaps only in my imagination) sort of like it's indeed 64 partials. I hope to eat my words here and there.
