Valhalla Delay, NI replika (and XT), free sixth sample Deelay, free Variety of Sound NastyDLA latest mk. Is something not covered by these regarding delays?

I normally use delay in a subtle way often with several other effects in the chain so I don't think my songs work as plugin demos.Lbdunequest wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 10:43 am Can you show some links to your music where you use VDelay?
I suggest taking a look at videos like this instead:

Can’t recall a time I’ve ever put a delay on a send. Reverb sometimes. Delay never.Gam456 wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 6:09 amTime based effect are typically used as a send effect, so use a side chain compressor or EQ
So…
Time-based effects are NOT typically used as a send effect by everyone.

There is many reason to use a send effectvitocorleone123 wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 5:19 pmCan’t recall a time I’ve ever put a delay on a send. Reverb sometimes. - preserve the dry signal and volume of the orignal signal
- add pre or post effect on the reverb or delay
- side chain for ducking
- pre eq or post eq the effect
- send on multiple track
Basically the idea it's to reproduce a live record
Exemple a drums or piano will have multiple mics like close for dry, and far for ambience.
On the mix, ambience will be parallel like a send effect.

All of this is true but there is no rule. On synths I much prefer using insert effects, imitating stomp box style routing. It also has some advantages over return fx when you want to use automation as a sound design element. If you through a reverb or delay on an insert which only has a mix control (not dry and wet), when you push mix up on the plugin, the volume of the dry signal decreases, which could be the desired effect. To achieve this with send, you would need to automate the volume of the dry signal and the return amount as well, opposed to one mix knob. It really is just a stylistic choice. There are no rules. On a lead vocal I would use send all the way.Gam456 wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 6:30 pmThere is many reason to use a send effectvitocorleone123 wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 5:19 pmCan’t recall a time I’ve ever put a delay on a send. For straight up delay my favourite is Replika XT, followed by Valhalla and then Echoboy. I find it much quicker to get a good sound quickly from Replika, plus it has more controls over its sidechain when compared to Valhalla.
Valhalla wins in terms of features and variety. Valhalla and Echoboy are also amazing for chorus/modulation effects.
With regard to sidechaining I find it’s much quicker to setup if it’s built into the delay. Using as an insert also allows for much easier post processing of the dry and wet signal when compared to using it as a send. In comparison using delay as a send allows much greater flexibility but it takes longer to setup. There’s no right or wrong way, whatever works for you…

OK, I didn't want to make this about me but if you insist....Lbdunequest wrote: Sun Dec 10, 2023 5:41 pm Oh i want to listen to your music where you use the delay, thats much more interesting
Pulling up the first track on my album, "Two Worlds," I see I am actually using 3 delays (ValhallaDelay, Echoboy and ColourCopy) which undermines my endorsement of ValhallaDelay a bit.
https://fragilegods.bandcamp.com/track/two-worlds
Right at the start, you hear the bass synth (Monark) going through ValhallaDelay.
Then at 0:16 you hear my voice processed with an Echoboy preset called "PopStarRadioEcho." There are a bunch of other saturation and compression effects but Echoboy is the delay.
During the chorus at 0:32, all the melodic synths are processed with ColourCopy using a preset called "TAS Infinitum." But this is pretty much buried behind the vocals and hard to hear in the final mix.
Hope this helps.

Handcuffs are the guarantee that you won't ever steal. So maybe go for handcuffs. It's safer.DCrown wrote: Sat Dec 09, 2023 9:06 am iLok is the guarantee that you haven't purchased cracked versions, so maybe go for iLok, it's safer.
And to think, all this time, I've been deliberately purchasing legitimate 'non-iLok' plugins, directly through the developers' own website and official vendors.
How could I have been so foolish?

Echoboy was and is still great, one of the easiest ones to configure for very musical results, only problem is the UI is very dated now and feels bad using it vs most current alternatives as V Delay.
Before Valhalla Delay was released I used Ubermod a lot and I actually still prefer it over Delay as a more adventurous delay and then some.
But my favorite is Replika XT, it seems simple but it can be very deep without going overboard as Relayer or Timless 3, the sound is great and to me it has a lot of character in almost all of its modern, except modern where it is quite clean. I also like a lot the repeats display when using the dual mode. The post fx are not very deep but all useful.

Yep, it's a very good delay. I have the paid version too. It can do bread and butter duties, but it's also great for sound design. The diffusion has a unique sound to it and you can get some very cool effects with the various delay and distortion modes. I just wish it had a colour palette other than blinding white or high contrast midnight blue & white.mabian wrote: Sat Dec 09, 2023 9:11 am Anybody tried Sixth Sample's Deelay? I think it's quite cool and also free... sometimes, especially for not too tricky sound and delay paths, it's even quicker to dial than the other major contenders involved in this thread ...

However, I agree on the GUI. It’s either burning my retina off or the other option brings back the great depression of the mid nineties.
