Archiving problem...

Hi all. I just figured out how to archive a project, in TW12, from an old forum post: I selected the project in TW's Projects window and then selected 'Create Archive'. It then asked me to select a folder in which to save the archive. I did that; I created a new folder for this purpose. I then initiated the archiving operation. Afterwards, I wanted to verify that the operation was successful, so I looked in the chosen folder, and sure enough, a .trkarch file had been created, albeit in a subdirectory called 'Archived' that TW had created.

Then, to check that the archived project was useable, I attempted to open it. I did this by selecting "Restore Backup" in TW's Projects window. It then asked me to select a folder in which to unpack the archive. I selected a folder. Then I see a tiny popup window saying "Errors occurred when trying to unpack this archive."

What did I do wrong? (Or, what did TW do wrong? :hihi: )
Many thanks!

It sounds like you tried to restore a backup instead of opening an archived project.

The backups are a relatively new thing. I can't tell you anything about them because I have pretty much ignored them. They happen automatically and I have never needed them.

But the archives are something I have used before. To un-pack an archive you use the Open Project button at the bottom left of the Projects page. You can also use the "Load a project or archive..." in the area to the right of the menu buttons at the bottom.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Easiest way - On Windows double clicking on a .tracktion archive file will open WF and then you'll see a dialog asking for a location to unpack in. The new restored project will then be highlighted in the projects list on projects page.

Thanks, @pough but this didn't work for me.

I don't see Load a project or archive anywhere. At bottom right of the Projects Page, I see this option: Import Material / Unpack an archive and add it to this project but that doesn't work for me either; nothing happens.

Thanks, @operandx, but this didn't work for me. When I do this, TW starts to load, but then I just see a black TW window, and nothing else happens.

Can't speak for Mac or Linux (as I've never used WF on those platforms) but on Windows this has always worked for me. Is your edit/project particularly large? Perhaps try with a simple basic edit first and see if that works. Save the .trkarch file somewhere other than the project folder before attempting to unpack and restore to a new folder.

Too vague. We can't help if you don't tell us the steps taken, expected results, and actual results. Otherwise it's just "something go wrong".

The choices are context-sensitive. It shows up when you have a folder selected, not a project selected. But it doesn't really matter since it's the same action as the "Open Project..." button.

I just went through the steps of choosing an edit in a project and creating an archive of it. That resulted in a .trkarch file. Then I used the "Open Project..." button, which allowed me to choose either a project file (".tracktion") or archive file (".trkarch"). I chose the recently-created archive file and successfully added a new project.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Thanks again for the help. I'm using Windows 10. Size of .trkarch file: 214644KB. I did a small edit to the project, as you suggested. When I tried to export the .trkarch file, TW threw up an error message saying: Error while exporting: The following files couldn't be copied successfully: temp.tmp. I think this was probably because I changed the suggested name of the .trkarch file when presented with the select destination file window. It works properly, if I leave the name of the .trkarch file unchanged. I find this pretty confusing and strange. I mean, if TW can't cope with the user changing the name of the .trkarch file to export, why does it give us the opportunity to change it, with a select destination file window?

That works for me, too - as long as I don't change the name of the .trkarch file to be exported, when presented with the select destination file window. I think the problem was the result of my changing the name of the destination file, when given the opportunity to do so.
