Dear Waveform Community,
Is there a difference between something called "aux return" and "aux receive"?
I would not assume so.
In Waveform the "aux send" from one track links to an "aux return" on a next track, but the "aux return" does not return anything. Instead it forwards the received signal to whatever comes next, to the right, in the signal chain. Also, in a post from the past here on this forum a Waveform app developer answered to someone "aux sends come in send/receive pairs so if you want to route a signal, you send it with an aux send and receive it with a aux receive."
So, why does the app presents this functionality as "aux return" (confusing) and not as "aux receive" (clearly understandable)?

You're going to have an uphill battle on this one, considering the terminology has been used successfully for a number of decades. Waveform admittedly does handle things a bit differently from physical audio routings (where returns are post-effects), but in 20 years you are the only person to even consider this, as far as I know.
The Send is where the audio sends from and the Return is where it returns to.
The Send is where the audio sends from and the Return is where it returns to.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

So, I understand that it is just a historically established usage of the terminology. It originates from past physical consoles. The term then became transferred to the digital world although DAWs can and nowadys usually do apply different signal chaining.
This is what I assumed, but in the end I wasn't sure and did not want to misconceive conceptional details which might be of importance when diving more and more into DAW usage.
Thanks a lot!

I have a Tascam Portastudio. Basically Aux Send sends a signal out of the machine for processing elsewhere and Aux Receive gets the processed signal back into the machine, probably on a new track. You could think of the digital version doing something similar with tracks. It may be that the signal can be sent out of a computer for processing as well.

Waveform can indeed send internal audio out to be processed and returned back in for incorporation. The "Insert" plugin (under the Waveform Utility plugin menu) can do this and lot more.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.
