The manual says "Slope defines the balance between the band thresholds therefore it basically defines the resulting sound character. A negative value
provides more energy for bass frequencies, which is often desirable."

But... relative to what? It defaults to a value of 0, but what does that actually represent? 0db/octave? 3db/octave?

In other words, if I want the various thresholds to sustain a FR sloped at 4.5db/octave, what should the "slope" setting be set to? -1.5? -4.5? Something else?

Also, maybe I'm just missing something, but after playing with it and doing some reading, I'm still not clear:

Does this do actual combined level maximization? At least for the settings I've used, I don't seem to be getting a hard ceiling for the output. Does this need to be followed by a single band limiter for final combined peak control, or is it capable of doing that internally like DMG Limitless or NewFangled Elevate do?

I don't really remember (too many ytears ago :D ), but I assume it's relative to the lowest band, but it doesn't really matter - it just increases/decreases the thresholds for consecutive bands. Remember - use your ears! ;)
