Serious question: is Discovery Pro actually good enough to put up with DiscoDSP or did everyone just buy it 10 years ago and now they're stuck with it?

well after raising the price after this 'upgrade'debacle, as to punish us, it became even more clear;

Might be the latter. No way in hell would I buy this over other synths like Current, UHe synths, Phaseplant, Serum, and so many "do it all" synths. DDSP are pricing themselves out of the park. It should be a $99 synth, with a $25 upgrade cost. Not to mention the DSP563 team has OSIRUS for free, and other synths in beta if you donate $20 to them.Greenstorm33 wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:34 am Serious question: is Discovery Pro actually good enough to put up with DiscoDSP or did everyone just buy it 10 years ago and now they're stuck with it?

my upgrade is $69 right now. If it goes on sale for like half that I might get it.

It is indeed a sonically impressive synth. I struggle to find any synth that sounds like it. None of the modern do-it-all are a match IMO, some sounds very good but this one has superior sound.Greenstorm33 wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:34 am Serious question: is Discovery Pro actually good enough to put up with DiscoDSP or did everyone just buy it 10 years ago and now they're stuck with it?
I guess it is because it dates back to 2003 and has received a lot of updates up to now. For me it's kind of the OG Gundam of virtual synths. Well worth the price.

All seems a little harsh to me. Sure, you may want things cheaper, we all do, but nobody is forced to buy anything. Vote with your virtual wallet, no need for tantrums. It's just a synth.

I bought it in 2014. I did pay for an upgrade from v6 to v7. I clearly remember being upset about my upgrade price at the time but I can't remember what exactly the price was. It wasn't $49 or $39, for sure. I paid it anyway, wanted to support the developer since I liked Discovery Pro.Greenstorm33 wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:34 am Serious question: is Discovery Pro actually good enough to put up with DiscoDSP or did everyone just buy it 10 years ago and now they're stuck with it?
There is 0% chance I would buy it now (new), not even at $99 or $79. Some of the moves that developer made over the years plus current attitude made sure I won't be supporting him anymore, even though I own more of his products.
For me, fact that he tried to screw me over by selling me dust is something I can't get over. I have spent decades in software development, reverse engineering, etc and this latest update notes look exactly like something i would see when people just tried to justify not doing their job by making low effort, highly visible change(s). However, 8.0 update seems to even miss highly visible change. Not even an effort to showcase what has changed/improved, just random bleating about immeasurable things.
Does it sound good? Yes, it does. Is it irreplaceable? Not at all.
Minimal Audio messed up with Current. People complained, they listened and didn't take it personally. In the end, they made right moves. I have massive amounts of respect for them for being able to separate personal feelings from business.
This is such a different story...

What a failure.
All big devs listened to their user base when they realized that their bad moves were making them out of business and all went well for both sides in the end.
Disco made an incurable fracture with his user base with these decisions.
I’m worried that the company will go out of business and that I will loose all the licenses.
I don’t see a lot chances to survive this wave for the company.
We’ll see.
Maybe they will end up pricing their softsynth like the hardware they emulate

as a synth it does sound good, particularly after the zdf filters got added in version 6 (maybe 7, can't remember). if you want something that emulates a Nord lead pretty closely and want that style of programming, this is the thing for you. opinions differ on how close but I reckon it's close enough for jazz (though maybe not psytrance).Greenstorm33 wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:34 am Serious question: is Discovery Pro actually good enough to put up with DiscoDSP or did everyone just buy it 10 years ago and now they're stuck with it?
but there are a ton of good-sounding synths these days with less of the upgrade-cost issues and general discodsp shenanigans. so, unless you're an absolute fan of programming sounds the Nord way (which is a bit quirky), those other options look a lot more attractive right now than they did last week.

It all didn't just start with the v8.0 upgrade
I've never written anything or participated in any DiscoDSP discussion before, but I remember situations like this one viewtopic.php?p=7434963#p7434963

The announcement of v8 prompted me to update my current v7.8 install to the most recent v7.9 release (which I hadn't been aware was already released).
I don't know how much stock to put in this, but just before I installed it yesterday, I got a false-positive warning from Norton Anti-Virus about it being a risk, due to so few (less that 50 people in the Norton AV community) having installed it.
Usually, when that happens it is only for very rare / little-known of, or little-used products. Or for updates that have JUST been released (like mere hours or at the most days ago, which wasn't the case here, since v7.9 was released 4 months ago). Which made we wonder if perhaps discoDSP's Discovery Pro customer base is rather smaller than I believed it would be. Since, it would seem to be one of their main products.
Of course, it may just mean there are many other owners of Discovery Pro v7.x, who likewise, hadn't gotten around to updating to v7.9 yet (or were unaware of its release).
But perhaps, if there are far fewer Discovery Pro customers than we may imagine there to be, then maybe discoDSP are more justified in asking for a higher upgrade price to v8.0, in order to help support their further development and improvements for the product going forwards?
Just throwing that (admittedly unfounded) theory out there, as a possible reason for the upgrade pricing to v8.0. As I rarely ever get such 'popularity' warnings from my AV for plugins which genuinely do have a very obvious active user base.
And no, I haven't yet updated to v8.0 myself yet. One of the reasons being the current pricing, the other being, I don't use the plugin as much as I once did.
Feel free to disregard, if you don't agree with the theory, or suppositions. It's just an alternative take on the situation. Make of it what you will.

Checking the receipt. I bought mine in 2014 at a price of EUR 71.40, but I did get a discount on that (so I must have bought it in a sale of some kind).Vortifex wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2024 3:50 pm Corona has also just doubled in price from $99 to $199. Glad I got it while it was cheap in a sale.
Now at $199! I'm sure they will be flying off the shelves.
Could there be a technical glitch for these recent prices, or are they officially the new prices?
