Musak should contain absolutely NO messages because we already live in information era and suffer from information overflow.

what about the Rapper/HipHopper? I thought the message is the only thing that counts in a song.

No it isn't, he's asking for your opinion. My opinion is yes and no. I rarely pay any attention to the lyrics of music I am listening to but I feel that if I am going to write lyrics they should impart something useful. i.e. You will never hear a NOVAkILL song with "la-la" or "na-na" or "shoop-shoop" in it, although you may hear skreaming.
Maybe you could scream the La Las and Na Nas and maybe even the Shalalalas

I alays put subliminal message to my music to brainwash listeners. You know, I am part of secret society, currently we want to dominate the world. It´s nice to have a hobby.

I think same here, but that's not quite the same as having a message is it?

maan, im shocked, how many narrow minded guys are posting these forums. that musicians are far form poetry, and philosophy? nooo. you have never listened to music then brother. of course not if youre into dumb'n'bass. i think all good music has a story to tell us. music is all about expressing something, if you dont, then it stinks and you just copied the copy of someone trying to tell something.

ps: someone mentioned abstract music above. hehhh,, tell me which music isnt abstract? music IS the abstract.

do you really need to be agressive while sharing your point of view? what is a narrow minded attitude again?

welcome to KvR, BtW

I think that both music with a message and music that is completel void of message, they're both equally valid and pleasing. It all depends on my mood.

Hi there,

good point, I think. problem for me - not with Mc Donald's-meant-for-music you mentioned earlier, I'm with you there too - is that at least in Germany the few radiostations who play what's thought of being "avantgarde" and "cool" - today always interspersed with bashing others, what a pity and how ridiculous - ALWAYS try to say something.

They play a song, say by an old Detroit-techno-veteran whom they like, who still influences musicians. And EVERY TIME then they bash in an obscene way "the eighties" or something. It's not really clear what they think the "nineties" or "zero-zeros or whatever clichés... " ARE...but they indeed have their message. And the ridiculous thing is that they would agree in the sentence: we have no messages, "messages are for stupid 70's people who wear green clothes and have too much hair" or other bashing-statements...

To me sometimes it sounds a bit like the result of what I'd call "oversampling"(not the thing Rene from rgcaudio in a better way means with that :hihi: :D ). There is a hidden fear that what some do as music - and I like that music - would be tooooooo repetitive and boring. Ambient musicians fear that anyone would make "ambient music", techno-musicians fear... and so on. This is not a new thing, it seems this fear always existed.
So a way out of that - I just can speak of german university, social and gender sciences and so on, and of posh radiostations - is BASHING. It's a shame, and there are nearly no persons to say anything against this bashing since ages...only because many tend to think "that's cool".

Result: I agree to your statement of "already too much there" in a way.
But it is obvious that real political statements or some about humanity in the western world have disappeared, get bashed, and a new conservatism has come.
So against that i think Putte and Rsmus7 are very right, and seen that way we have a time behind us where nothing was said, too much silence in the midst of all that we see every day. Strange, is it???

This is NOT to say let's bake a new Dylan, or that music who would SAY something, in music or in words, would be "false philosophy". It's a problem that is hard to solve, as a big mainstream not only at McDonald's thinks exactly the same as anyone thinks. (Kind of "protest musicians stink!"). They ARE the mainstream, and very often don't recognize it...

well, it´s a message :)
Honestly, good HipHop lyrics have a message (apart from that Pussy thing) also I think it´s easier for them because they have more lyrics then e.g. a Pop singer (verse/refrain/verse/refrain.. end of story = to short).
