A Newspaper Burns in the Sand and the headlines say "Man, This Story's Mad!" Extra, Extra, Read all the bad news on the War for Peace that everybody'll Lose
The rise and fall of the last great empire, the sound of the whole caught on fire. the Ruthless Struggle, The Desprate Gamble, the Game that left the whole world in Shambles. the cheat, the lies, the alibis and the foolish atempt to conquer the skies. lost in space but what is it worth, the president just forgot about earth. spendin' mutli-billions and maybe even trillions, the cost of weapons ran into zillions
the gold in the street and there's dimonds under feet and the children in africa don't even eat. Flies on their faces they're livin' like mice and the houses even make the ghetto look nice. The water tastes funny it's forever too sunny and they work all month and don't make no money. A fight for power, a nuclear Shower, The People shout out in the Darkest Hour
The Sight's unseen and voices unheard and Finally the bomb gets the last word

I grew up listening to dylan and the beatles. no doubt, messages in the music. funny thing, when folks started dylan serious, he had to jump and say, (paraphrased) 'wait a minute, I ain't no leader'
the only message I want to bring is love; i ain't no politician. I'd much rather my music contain a feeling, rather than a message.

I believe any music that's been percieved as good by someone contains a message.. even if it's not obvious or only picked up unconciously.. and even unknow by the maker himself

Music is one of the oldest forms of non-verbal communication. The "message" is not contained in the lyrics (many types of music do not include lyrics).
The music contains the "message" in a form that transcends language (and we can enjoy music, even if we cannot understand the language of the composer). We respond differently to music that is quicker or slower, melodic or full of dissonance, loud or quiet, repetitive or free-flowing.
All forms of communication contain some form of "message", as communication is an expression of the state of being of the "sender" (i.e. musician in this case) - these ideas do not need to be able to be diluted to an idea expressible in words. Music in itself is an expression of the soul, and the language of the soul is emotive, not verbal.

I love "Sheep May Safely Graze", and I love "Pour Some Sugar On Me", and I love "The Boxer". I love "Block Rockin' Beats". They all have different sorts of messages, and can all be enjoyed independently of any inherent message, if one wishes.
As for the people who say musicians aren't the best politicians, poets, and philosphers: correctamundo! The best storyteller is not neccessarily the best film-maker; would you want "Lord of the Rings" to be directed by Spaulding Gray? (Don't answer that!)
Put another way, poetry, philosophy, and politics may be used as ingredients in lyrics. Do you want your soup made by the guy who grows the best carrots, or by the best chef?
I enjoy the insightfulness and humor of this board. A few less enlightened posters don't ruin it for me.
Thanks to all!

most good music causes the listener to draw their own message. Music should be an inspiration to the listener...

well, yes, since music is a way of expression, and what is a message but expression? however, that doesn't mean message equals lyrical content necessarily. Instrumental music transmit messages too. a song may transmit a message of loneliness, sadness, happiness, etc...
