Music.. with or without.. message.

No reason music shouldn't contain a message, and no reason music should contain a message. I like tunes without vocals as much as I like Rage Against The Machine. But maybe I'm weird.

Uhh, scratch the maybe part.

I find a large # of protest songs to be pretty boring, though - that kind of message might find a better path than music (or find better lyricists and musicians). I'd rather hear someone screaming about stomping someones ass into dust for being a facist pig of a cop than I would someone with an acoustic guitar whining about how bad police are.

Oh well, back to doing wannabient.

but saying music with a message equals music with lyrics and so music without lyrics equals music without message is a mistake.

I admit that there is music without lyrics that has a message, albiet I suspect at an emotional level instead of an intellectual/political one. Most dance music has the message "dance damn it", I suppose!

More coffee, maybe I'll make a coherent post after another cuppa or two. Maybe I'll go look up Brandon Trinity again, the shock should get my blood flowing!

i'm not sure they actually give a shit whether the proles think or not.

*edit* by which i mean perhaps you credit them with too much 'intelligence' (for want of a better word). I don't think 'they' consider it as much as e.g. you do. they just bumble on in a 'higher' strata of mindlessness.

Hmmm...

I think music's primary purpose is to stir the listenner's emotions. It can make them happy, sad, angry, contemplative, ect..

I don't see this as requiring music to have a message, as I see "a message" as something focused, this is good or this is bad, where emotion is more let me help you experience a feeling.

well that's what happens when you suck up a whole bunch of contrived artificial experience.. you saturate yourself with demi-impressions that imprint all kindsa values so it doesn't really matter what you think you're doing, it's game over for purity of volition, and you'll do what the new, improved 'right course' is

music is a message either way. For me I look for music and lyrics that move my emotions in one way or another, passionately. I love lyrics that are simple and profound to me. Either way what music is, is a message, its a package of arranged sounds that is hopefully transmitted to the ear which can learn the intentions of the artist or even find a new meaning. By asking if music should HAVE a message, is a pretty ignorant thing to ask. It already is a message in and of itself when you hear it. If youre talking about like music about how drugs are bad or some like storyteller that has a moral at the end of a song, its not like that. I dont know man, its kind of dumb to ask this question, simply put.

IMO music can contain a message if you want it to. Even if the author didnt put the message in there on purpose. Its like... whatever floats your boat.
