You would think a drum machine vsti would have this. I have yet to find one, but one with an included sequencer, like Drum computer, can save a sequence with a roll you made.Mr D wrote: Wed Jan 17, 2024 11:27 am Bumpizzle on this one, any good drum roll instruments available in 2024?

Actually, I have had Drum Computer for a few years and don't think it can do a realistic drum roll- it has auto flange, repeat until note is off, but it is too synthetic. I have some samples of drum rolls, but they have reverb....

check out Beat Scholar by Modalics. Turn off the sampler and then send the midi to your drum instrument of choice. There are several randomizing tools that would give you various rolls / trap beats. It won't sound like playing rolls on a real snare but its a fun plugin for making beats.

So you could have up to a 42-hit roll sure, but does it do crescendo? or velocity randomization?slimponey wrote: Thu Jan 18, 2024 10:40 pm check out Beat Scholar by Modalics. Last time I saw that plugin it was far too basic.

Pitch Innovations groove shaper is really good for rolls.
You set up shapes on a step sequencer that correspond to note values.
Each step can be adjusted for velocity, gate and swing.

Just set the piano roll to a really small increment and draw however bars of hits you want. Pay attention to Velocities also or it won't sound right.

Roll Control developer here. I appreciate the mentions.
The Roll Control concept is fairly simple. It's essentially a midi fx plugin that takes held notes and re-triggers them as rolls. Use your mod wheel to control velocity. Put it at zero to make rolls stop. There's also options for automating the speed, and for dialing in humanization.
Here's a quick example of how Roll Control works using Kontakt instruments:
It also includes a VST/AU version as well. (Tested in Logic, Cubase, Reaper, Studio One.)

I was coming here to suggest adding a feature where multiple notes could be triggered and the various samples cycled through as the roll (Different articulations of snare hit positions for example). Then I tried alternate hit mode and it does exactly what I wanted. Great feature.LandofMissingParts wrote: Fri Jan 19, 2024 4:37 pm Roll Control developer here. I appreciate the mentions.

Is the goal rolls or fills? I often see these terms used interchangeably.
XLN Life is great for fills. Just fly your beat into it and randomize until you get something you like.
