One Synth Challenge #179: Any One Synth (ZioMau wins!) (Updated Prize)

This time not just a one synth challenge, its a one instance of the Grid, its also one single note. Its more a sound, a sort of moving drone. Its inspired by pendulums in different length like in this video:

Its 2*24 Oscillators with an AR envelope. One set of oscillators is tuned in the first 24 overtones, the second set is tuned in the first 24 prime overtones. Each envelope is triggered with a different duration corresponding to the length of a pendulum. I modulate the waveforms, the attack and decay times and a cross fade between the two sets of oscillators. The length of that excerpt is one round until the pendulums are together again. As the modulations have different speeds, the piece is way longer than that...

Minor nitpick, but the C in OSC stands for Challenge not Contest. There are some amazingly proficient and talented musicians and producers who take part and there are people who are close to the beginning of learning this very complex art. The main point of it is not to pick up a free VST or sample pack but to challenge your creativity with constraints. Sometimes those constraints are easier to grapple with and sometimes they’re harder.

This and Impedance's track made me question my track / what I did vs I wanted to achieve and Its motivated me to start again from scratch. One day left and so I'm going to produce a new track with a random past OSC VST that I've not used before and that is really limiting. Something that gives me the most joy in OSC is when I can get a free soft synth to really shine musically. I think I've picked the synth I'm going to use. I've gone for VK-1

Well I think I was being a little bit overambitious with this one. Started a track yesterday listened back today and thought I can't finish this in time. Usually I have a little downtime at work but today was mental and now I'm sitting down with no motivation to finish it. Oh well.

Doing drums on a Juno is so hard. You really learn and appreciate the limitations when you don't have other synths and machines surrounding it to shore up its weaknesses. Next time we get to choose I'm picking Serum or something that's very versatile. Half my time was spent doing drums and I still hate them.

Finally! This month's challenge felt like actual work! I opted to use one of my wee pile of hardware synths: IK Multimedia's Uno Synth Pro. Midi tracks were laid down in Waveform Pro and recorded (repeatedly) one track at a time as audio. At least my Scarlett 8i6 also gets a look in here...

Anyhoo, 15 'instances' of the IK Uno Synth Pro recorded with Tracktion Waveform Pro 12 and the following plugins:

- The usual Clip to Zero collection of dpMeter 5, Blue Cat Gain 3 and KClip 3
- Tracktion TEqualiser
- TRacks EQP-1A and Black 76 to tame the snare a bit
- Tracks Comprexxor to glue the layered kick
- Air Drumsynth 500 as a percussion standin as the percussion tracks were bounced from the Uno (disabled in the final mix)
- TRacks Bus Compressor on the percussion mix buss
- Mastering the Mix BASSROOM, MIXROOM and LEVELS on mastering duty along with TDR Kotelnikov and TRacks Stealth Limiter
- IK Uno Synth Pro Editor for patch editing convenience

One synth preset was used (Reso Pad) while the rest of the sounds were created from init.
