I was having similar problems when I updated to WinXP service pack 2. I found that by backing out to SP1 the problem went away. I later I found some supplemantary WinXP install files for the notebook I m using and once applied I was able to re-apply SP2 with no problems. I am using a PIII 500 mHz notebook with 256 ram. The CPU has gotten to be somewhat of a limitation but I am getting by for now.

thanks for the responses guys.
i have messed with the audio latency and midi timing settings, but haven't met with any success.
i've disabled my anti-virus scan and tried to shut down any background stuff that might interfere with tracktion but it doesn't make any difference. the playback is still choppy and broken. both midi and audio is the same, broken and choppy.
i don't want to modify the os setup on this machine too much if possible. it's the family machine.
thanks in advance for any help.

don't know if anyone is interested, but i happened upon a fix my problem.
my gateway has a sigmatel sound card with configurable jacks. it also supports 5.1 sound. anyways, while trying to perform a latency test i plugged a set of headphones into the mic input (didn't have a mic handy). when i went back to check the sedttings change the playback was perfect. i thought that was the end of woes until i unplugged the headphones, boom back to skipping.
long story short (too late i know), as long as there is something plugged into the mic input jack everything's cool. regardless of the configuration settings assigned to that jack.
thought someone else with similar equipment might benefit from this info.
