I use an old application called Midisoft Studio 6. It's really useful in that all of the midi information can be accessed and modified directly from the notation window by selecting whatever you want to see ( the note for pitch, velocity, etc, the metronome mark for tempo, and so on) and using the "inspector" tool to edit the information.

I like it because I am pretty old school when it comes to composition, so for me it is pretty intuitive. And in any case, a lot of my stuff is too rhythmically dense and difficult to be efficiently entered via a live controller.

But here is the problem: It was written for Windows 98, and I am running XP. The major disadvantage is that it goes all buggy when I try to use its native midi player. This is not huge. But it is getting annoying, because whenever I want to 'proof-listen' a midi file I am working on I have to save it as a midi file, exit the application, and use another player. Slow. Slow. Slow.

So does anyone know of a notation based midi editing tool? OTHER than NoteWorthy? (Tried it, but found it to be too limiting).

Thanks in advance. :)

I think your best bet might be something such as a dedicated scoring program.
From what I know, Sibelius has pretty decent editing features - the latest versions are even coming with a build in version of NI's Kompakt, so you could listen to your compositions through proper sounds.

Another idea would be to simply use a sequencer offering a more or less proper scoring implementation. Cubase's score editor really isn't all that bad.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.
