Can any developer actually own digital wood panels, knob styles, or have a copyright on how the layout of a plugin can be? I could see if they were selling the plugin, but they are giving it away for free. I personally don’t understand why you would care at all.

I’m no fan of Behringer and have zero behringer gear in my studio, but one thing I like about them is how they highlight how companies try to hold a monopoly over the designs of musical instruments, and now it seem software instruments as well…

Did Tone2 license Moog, Roland or (insert analog synth here) when it designed and replicated the sound of vintage analog synths for its plugins? If not, that sort of hypocrisy is very off putting in my personal opinion.
One shows his/her age by stating whether or not they like Behringer. I'm from the period of time when Behringer was known for cheap crap that no one would dare buy second-hand.

It's the younger generation that gives Behringer any merit at all. And that's only because they are making cheap remakes.

Regardless of age, not much has changed as far as the company's ethics, build quality or originality is concerned.

I took one look at this gui in the first post and it instantly reminded me not of u-he who use wood panels, uad who also use wood panels, softube who also use wood panels, but tone2 and only tone 2...
it isn't just the wood panels or even the knobs...
It, for me and quite a few others here obviously, reminds them of tone2 stuff.

I haven't much followed or had need to follow UI copyright laws but for sure in song (best example and the one I disagree with but there is now precedence, is the Blurred Lines law suit) when feel/vibes/makes you think of mattered.

I think, emphasis on think, that for instance Urs contacted Dave Smith when he was doing Repro..

the sad truth is, even if it was a 100% copy, such cases depend on being able to afford to go to court, and usually, the company with the biggest bank account has the advantage.
This is sadly very true....

That's probably also the reason why neither Access Music nor Waldorf have sued the developers of the Motorola DSP project yet. Unsure outcome, and no money to waste on such a lawsuit.

That said, I'm sure that threats have been spoken out in this case. That's what I meant with my post above. Behringer surely don't take down everything regarding this plugin for fun. And, the dev in question here has a history with threats.

Maybe they're making progress on that free DAW they announced a few years ago?

Tone2 Synthesizers wrote: Tue Apr 09, 2024 11:18 am Many people have asked us if we are involved in the development of 'Behringer Vintage' as the art style seems to be very 'inspired' by Tone2 Saurus (https://www.tone2.com/saurus.html).
We are not collaborating with Behringer in any way. We are not responsible for the graphics, sound engine or anything else related to 'Behringer'. We have not licensed our graphics or art style to Behringer and are currently investigating whether our intellectual rights have been infringed.
So let me get this straight, you market Saurus by stating

*Saurus can do an extremely authentic emulation of analog synthesizers. It covers all important aspects of the most famous and expensive analog synths"

Did you get permission from those companies when you emulated their IP? Did you get permission from Sequential when you stole their art style for this plugin?

Then you state

"That's why Saurus comes with a filter section which models the most famous analog filters."

Did you get permission from Moog and Sequential and Oberheim when you modeled the filters used in their current products?

The hypocrisy you are displaying here is rather stunning

Are we supposed to feel bad for you that you think someone was inspired by your plugin? When you openly market the fact that you stole the IP of other companies for your product?
Specifically what IP was stolen? The "sound" of Analog synthesizers? Which ones specifically? Was it specifically mentioned? What about the "sound" of the Saurus filters?

What you are specifically stating is that Tone 2 recreated the "sound" of famous analog synthesizers and filters--but was it done using actual circuitry? Computer modeling of a "sound" does not use any actual IP of the analog machines that originally created that "sound".

Here's the truth. Tone 2 didn't steal any intellectual property of a single soul. Your accusation is flat out false. There is no repeatable IP exchanged between the way an analog synth or filter creates a sound and the way that sound is recreated in the digital realm. One uses actual circuitry, and the other uses digital code to mimic the sound.

And as for sound? There is nothing illegal about recreating a sound--even if it was for a specific synthesizer. Any person could recreate the exact sounds of an analog synth in the digital realm and sell it without any problem--it's only the trademark one has to be careful of. Note that Tone 2 didn't specifically mention any particular synth.

Oh, you want to argue that recreating the sound is illegal? Tell it Harley and see if they agree:

I somehow doubt it...... especially the "free" part. Behringer is a business. Businesses don't do "free". If a money making entity offers something for free, there is a specific reason--even if it is simply brand advertising. There is ALWAYS a reason. Maybe it is advertising, maybe it's information gathering through telemetry, who knows? What I do know is that companies don't just release free things out of the goodness of their hearts. There is a catch, even if it isn't readily visible at this moment. You can hang your hat on this guarantee:

If a company provides you something without any cost, you can be assured that "YOU" are the product.

Longer! About 22 years, if I'm not mistaken! :D

Neither did Behringer with this plugin yet the developer is pretending like they did

Side by side...I dunno why so many knickers are being twisted here. It's pretty different in an awful lot of ways.
I can see 2 obvious similarities: the dark strips under the knobs, and the knob surrounds. I'd be amazed if those knob surrounds haven't got something very similar on many other plugins though...

The Blue 'lcd' screen design, wood trim, and the soft gradient buttons and knobs are extremely similar. Let's not gloss over facts. And the fact that several here thought it was a Tone2 derived plugin proves there are similarities to their style of products.

It doesn't have to be a 1:1 copy to be like something.

Not that it really matters for us endusers. But maybe it should for Tone2 because this Behringer synth is pretty lackluster and yet looks like it could have been designed (graphically) by Tone2. So I could see why they might be upset a bit.. that doesn't help Tone2 brand imaging to the public.
