Did anyone here ever learn the great art of counterpoint. If so, do you make a conscious effort to use it in your music.

Not wanting to be pedantic, but I do believe the phrase is "punctus contra punctum"

I do use a great deal of counterpoint, although I am sure that I break the 'rules' quite frequently.
Perhaps a better term for what I do is "polyphony".

I was always confused about whether "counterpoint" referred to the music itself, or to the pedagogical tool for teaching students how to write it.

Okay, lets get this over with.

I chose "herodotus" (note the lower case first letter) as a screen name before I knew that KVR was going to be the next big thing for me. I had never spent this much time on a forum before and I didn't really think about it very much when I first came here.

Furthermore, when I first registered at KVR I had recently had an extremely humbling experience on Ebay, where every combination of letters I could come up with had already been taken as a screen name.

And so, I came to KVR because I had some questions about Tracktion. I was tired, and all I really wanted to do was render a project to wave so that I could burn a c.d. and listen to it on my car stereo. I was asked to submit a screen name. I cast my eyes about the room in desperation. My eyes light on a copy of "The Persian Wars" by Herodotus. I give it a try... It works!!!

Thats all there is to it. I am not a know-it-all. Promise. I am a total Newbie and I am well aware of it.

Please don't hate me!!!!

I had to study counterpoint and fugue (6 levels)

While I agree a new composer needs to know all about polyphonic music, making a fugue is a pain in the a** and not much practical these days.

I think the important part is to learn about balanced melodies and how to measure the degree of "beauty" (usefulness) inside it, species and horizontal structures, so to make easier for the student to understand there is something more than just homophonic chord progressions and a melodic line on the top, which is the main problem with today's new composition students.

maybe thats my appreciation of it after long periods squeezing my head to comply with all rules inside severe counterpoint, but It's a puzzle, even my teacher admited it wasn't so practical to make a complete fugue at the end, only 2 of 16 students could finish it. (I could finish about 60%)

It's an amazing science and I still love it :)
