Some weird locale related crashes with newer plugin builds

So just now I had a weird experience trying to start a new production on my Kubuntu 24.04 system. I found adding an instance of Diva instantly crashed REAPER. A little experimenting found that the same happened with Satin, but not Presswerk or Hive (which are of course older builds than the current Diva/Satin), and both clap and vst3 were affected. To make things more bizarre, I discovered that if I started REAPER from a terminal, it worked fine. The crash only occurred when I started it via my desktop environment (KDE), hinting that it wasn't maybe strictly the plugin or REAPER itself, but something related to the environment.

I then went to look at system logs, and found that at the point of a crash there was an error iirc relating to not being able to set C locale, or something on those lines. I don't recall the exact wording, and trying to find it again after rebooting my machine would be a little too much work. This gave me a clue about the issue, though, and I realized I had recently been messing with KDE's region/language settings, and they were a mix of a couple different locales—because I mostly prefer British English but don't actually live in the UK. I set it all back to my default locale (in my case British English), rebooted, and everything seems to work again now.

So anyway, I'm writing this A) as a heads-up to the devs that there could be something a little wonky with the locale code in your newer builds, since only the current stable Diva and Satin versions appeared to be affected out of the ones I tried. And B) in case any other users are having unexplained crashes with these plugins, this could be another avenue to look into... Sorry I can't provide more precise information, the issue on my end is now fixed and I'm not keen on trying to replicate it again... :)

Thank you for this report.
We are indeed working on locale support for our plugins, but it's still work in progress.
So far we only have an English locale file delivered with the plugins.
We'll look into this.

I think KDE/Kubuntu might be a little more prone to locale issues than other linux systems I've used in the past. Or at least I recall having some locale related issues I had to work around when I first installed my current system last year. I don't remember the specifics any more, though—but it's possible that some locale stuff on my machine is a little messed up to begin with because of that.

This one was still pretty weird, though. I think all I did was try to change, like, the measurements and currency options in KDE's region settings. That really shouldn't affect your plugins, I feel...
