i say that as someone who has spent a good deal of money on otb equipment, but i know it isn't necessary, i just like to use hardware.

They just plugged ole ricky direct into the interface. Riiiiiiight.

Sure, you're right. Still, in 2024, someone can absolutely plug directly into an interface and get that same level of quality. No, the various Neve preamp emulations do not sound the same as the real thing, but throw on some Soothe, Luna summing, and tape emulations, and I don't think Rupert Neve himself would have been able to pick out which is which in a blind test.
