I've done the first tests, compared to a bunch of clippers I own, played with input and output levels, saturation and knee, .... This module is crazy, awesome, thanks for this update Adrian!

Excited to try it out!Aledes wrote: Tue Jun 04, 2024 12:10 pm I've done the first tests, compared to a bunch of clippers I own, played with input and output levels, saturation and knee, .... This module is crazy, awesome, thanks for this update Adrian!![]()

As I was comparing some plug ins for saturation and similarf stuff, this clipper algorithm is very welcomed and it is amazing.
It sounds more open with more depth than Sonnox Inflator
I get warmer sounding results with more overall flexibility as with LTL Silver Bullet
It's a bit less grainy and more flexible and with a smoother sound than SIR Sandard Clip
similar to the Inflator, it sounds more open with more depth than Apogee Soft Limit
I like the sound of the saturation/clipping more than the Make Believe / Metric Halo Mixhead,
but this one has a very special and nice open sound in the mids.
To get this in APshaper I tried the clipper in harmonic mode and reversed the phase of the 6,7 and 8 overtone, sounds great and possibly even better than Mixhead? I have to try it more.
I did my comparisons without oversampling. I do not say it's the best out there, of course there are different mindsets and goals with all of us, but to me this is the best "ITB density unit" without sacrificing the stereofield and details and it doesn't suck the live out of the music
Thank you very much Mr. Apulsoft!
And there it is, sorry:
is it possible to get M/S for the 3 Filter parts? Would be perfect in my view.
Is it possible to get this clipper as a module like the other modules in Apqualizer?

Totally agree!!!

By design, MixHead adds just the 3rd harmonic (and maybe a tiny bit of the 5th when the input signal is reaching 0 dBFS).
There is no way you'll get something similar sounding out of any other saturator, as they will output way more upper harmonics.
Also, MixHead is not used for adding sound. If you hear a "sound", you're already driving it too hot.

Just for the filters? Not for the entire plugin? What is the use-case? It would be certainly possible, but I need to understand why it is needed.guppi wrote: Thu Jun 06, 2024 7:54 pm is it possible to get M/S for the 3 Filter parts? Would be perfect in my view.
I'm thinking about using this clipper algorithm for the output clipper in apQualizr2 in general (is using tanh() saturation so far). It is not possible to have saturation/clipping as a module as that would not work with the various phase modes.guppi wrote: Thu Jun 06, 2024 7:54 pm Is it possible to get this clipper as a module like the other modules in Apqualizer?

It is very easy to get just 3rd and 5th harmonics out of apShaper. By using the harmonic engine where you can define how much 3rd and 5th harmonic you want and won't get anything else. In the way I understand it, that is not really saturation though.sircuit wrote: Sat Jun 08, 2024 4:04 pm By design, MixHead adds just the 3rd harmonic (and maybe a tiny bit of the 5th when the input signal is reaching 0 dBFS).

The entire Plug-In seemed a little much to ask. I use the mod matrix for transient manipulation and to have this in M/S would help me to get more flexibility for the stereo field. If possible 2 more bands would be great.Just for the filters? Not for the entire plugin? What is the use-case? It would be certainly possible, but I need to understand why it is needed.
If not as a module it would be good to have a threshold for the clipper in Apqualizer to be independend from the dynamicstructure within Apqualizer itself so if you are done with the dynamic dependent eq part you could drive this thing to taste.I'm thinking about using this clipper algorithm for the output clipper in apQualizr2 in general (is using tanh() saturation so far). One last thought here for apQualizer2: If there is a clipper at the input stage and the output stage with their own threshold /ceiling settings, you could have the dynamics of the main eq part reacting differently to the input-drive-dependent crest factor of the incoming signal. Seems desirable to me, like the best channelstrip out there is also included in apShaper2..

Being the one who begged Adrian to implement that most recent Clip transfer curve in ApShaper, I'll add that it's incredibly transparent and useful in a mastering chain, pre-limiter. With ApShaper's AADA it's marvelously pristine, and I've ditched my other clippers from my toolkit (StandardClip, GoldClip and OVC-128).
A simple trick that works 99% of times : if the highest peak of a tune reaches say -3 dB FS, set the floor value to a higher value (like 2 or 2.5 dB). With a knee set anything between 3 to 6dB, you'll enjoy some deliciously transparent peak controlling without reaching full clipping per se. You'll get equally useful and tasteful results on single instruments too.
Brilliant stuff !

GoldClip actually claims to use ADAA, but either botched the implementation or botched the oversampling. It aliases similar to other clippers & has a relatively high noise floor that increases based on the oversampling amount. Claims to use some sort of new "amplitude modulation"-based oversampling technique, not sure about the details though. The CPU usage doesn't make up for the poor anti-aliasing performance, it's much higher than apShaper. (Maybe that's in part due to iLok? Just a throwaway guess, no evidence to support this)nilhartman wrote: Mon Jul 29, 2024 1:22 pm Being the one who begged Adrian to implement that most recent Clip transfer curve in ApShaper, I'll add that it's incredibly transparent and useful in a mastering chain, pre-limiter.
