Out of curiosity: how do people use the freeze function. Automate a toggle from your DAW to fill gaps between parts?
Are there more tricks to it, that I don't see?
One trick I like doing is automatically enabling freeze at the release of notes. Along with reverb ducking this can give really nice unreal ambiences that don't overpower the main instrument. Whether this is useful or not would of course depend on the genre of music.

OK, noone has mentionned the great winner of the KVR developer challenge 2021: Solaris

haven't seen it mentioned yet:
soundtoys little plate and superplate

When I use freeze verbs I automate the volume of the source track to isolate just the section I want frozen, and then I automate the freeze button on at exactly the right time to catch the magic moment, often fading the source audio out pretty quickly after that.
I do that all as a separate sound design audio bouncing process though, then import the freeze into my main project where I can manipulate it further with volume shaping etc.
I wouldn't have the patience or nerves to try and set up perfect freezes within larger projects, unless the whole thing was very simple. I'd be pulling out my hair in no time! :D

Thanks for all the latest mentions. I've had Timeless 2 since forever and I think I spotted a freeze button on the GUI yesterday. Wasn't expecting that. Need to go back and investigate.
Nice that Pro-R 2 freezes, I'm sure you could get some spectacular results with the general transparency of that verb!
Soundtoys Plates are welcome additions! They sound so good :D
Thanks for the link to Giant Verb. I've been wanting to try that for ages and it keeps slipping under the radar. No more excuses now!
I need to try Adam Szabo's Solaris again. Everything the guy makes is absolute gold, but I found Solaris kinda harsh on first run. Maybe it's just not for me, I'm not a shimmer verb guy. But I need to check it out without the shimmer properly. Might be a beaut in there.

Sweet! Thanks for explaining your process!

So the only "natural" use I've seen so far is freeze as a highlight on throw FX situations.
But I bet there are some useful use cases for dub-pads and other atmosphere situations.

Found a nice example:

Thanks for the video!
Haven't watched it yet, but I love the way Raum can get into very granular territory depending how you set the diffusion parameter. I could even get that typical creaking door effect by setting diffusion to zero and playing with the delay time, in freeze mode iirc.
Raum packs a lot in a small package! Excellent :D

So I watched the video, and it's a good demonstration for basic typical usage. I found his method a bit convoluted with creating groups to record to etc, I'm not sure that's entirely necessary, you could just route to another audio track... but maybe it was the way his project was set up with busses etc already.
I usually like to use freeze on vocals, to accentuate certain syllables or parts of the vocal, so my typical session involves a lot more pin-point automation of the vocal volume and on/offing of the freeze button.
Depending on how busy the project is I'll either move the vocal over into a blank space down the timeline and work there, or preferably just do it in a fresh project and export the results and import them into the main project where they can be processed and edited further like any other audio track.
My aim is usually to get those kinds of vocal granular washes you hear in movie soundtracks, but precisely tailored for the track. Not just a generic slap on effect, hehe :))

So far I'm loving Raum for an alternative to granular. I always loved the sound of simple granular stuff, but never found a vst with a workflow that really felt right for me. I think I should have stopped trying to get realtime results a long time ago, that would have been better. But I'm at last getting the results I wanted by bouncing reverb freezes and editing them in.

Did anyone mention Sugar Bytes Turnado? It's a module called Freezeverb.

I know the Neural DSP Rabea plugin does that. It might be worth checking out. I've used the plugin on more than just guitar.

Freeze button
Morphing between four presets
Shimmer effect

Don't use factory bank, use Deneb Pinjo bank, and make it default.
Amazing reverb...
Thx for mentioning Reverbical!

The demo sounds amazing (yes, with the Deneb Pinjo bank as you suggested)!

Unless I`m blind, I can`t find a way to buy it.. :(
