There's a working theory that it may be the ring falling apart from high voltage, from what I understand i9s run in 1.4-1.5v territory.

What's interesting is that there is basically no response from Intel. Possible reasons may be: a) they have no idea what is going on, b) they know what is going on, c) they don't care. I sincerely can't decide which is the worst case.

Anyway, follow the basic rule of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; don't panic. If it goes bad, try to RMA. Think of a backup plan. I think I would try get 12900k, which you can still buy new, try to RMA and then get rid of 14700k (which I expect may be quite hard as this affair get momentum) and accept that I made a wrong choice. Not the first time in my life. Be happy you didn't get i9.

Voltage reading that I listed from HWinfo are:
"Core VIDs" in the CPU section - this is the requested voltage by the CPU
"Vcore" in the ASUS mobo (Nuvoton NCT6798D) section - this is voltage delivered

SA VID is System Agent which "handles critical tasks related to memory control, DMI, and PCIe, among other high-speed functions. On Intel CPUs, separate power is allocated to the CPU, System Agent, and Graphics."

I have watched the video... until Intel comes out with an explanation we are just guessing.
At least I don't have any issues with CPU :pray:. I will keep the system and wait to see what happens...

The 13900k sitting next to me has been running fine for two years. It runs 24/7.
Many clients (working in TV/Film and Video Game scoring) have been using 13900k and 14900k machines on a daily basis.

I've got a 14700k mini-ITX build behind me (280mm AIO cooling)... that runs extremely quiet and completely stable.
Scores 34k with Cinebench Multi-Core
Has a 4060Ti video card... (if I want to run Davinci Resolve, etc)

If you simply want to throw parts together, run air-cooling, and set everything in BIOS to "Auto", 12700k is more that type of build.

There's no good reason to avoid an i9 CPU or a 14th Gen CPU.
If you don't know how to configure the build, you can seek help from someone who does.
It's down to configuration.

Would it be nice to have lower TDP?
Of course
Would I like QC to be better post Covid?
Absolutely
Will either of those deter myself/clients from the performance of an i9 build?

I don’t think your sample set is big enough to continuously assert that the issue is the lack of expertise of the builder. It is likely these CPUs are more sensitive than an average builder can manage without some digging but you’re being overly dismissive in light of the reports. I respectfully don’t think it wise to hold to this position until the dust settles a bit. You may be proven correct but given the cost of these systems if you are wrong and people follow your lead some are in for a rough go. A bit of wait and see is warranted as I see it.

Obviously anyone is free to do what they want/choose.

I build these machines every single day. That's my job... and has been for 30 years.
The machines work... and clients are productive.

I'm not a neophyte working on my 5th, 10th, or even 100th build.

Anyway, new update from Intel:
"Based on extensive analysis of Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors returned to us due to instability issues, we have determined that elevated operating voltage is causing instability issues in some 13th/14th Gen desktop processors. Our analysis of returned processors confirms that the elevated operating voltage is stemming from a microcode algorithm resulting in incorrect voltage requests to the processor.

Intel is delivering a microcode patch which addresses the root cause of exposure to elevated voltages. We are continuing validation to ensure that scenarios of instability reported to Intel regarding its Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors are addressed. Intel is currently targeting mid-August for patch release to partners following full validation."

Nice to see an official response and a potential fix without requiring return to manufacturer. The time it takes to prove a deficiency after you’ve isolated a cause not to mention actually configuring and optimizing the computer; followed by hours of software authentication and installation is significant. I am sure those that are having issues are breathing a little easier.
