Korg knows their stuff. Their Odyssey is very close to the actual thing. I don't doubt they did a great job with 2600. I could only compare with my Behringer 2600, but that one is not quite the same sound as the OG.

Once in idle mode and then with four notes triggered.
I don't think it is coincidence that my favourite ones use the most cpu generally speaking.

I have compared the plugin to my Korg 2600M and i would say Korg did an amazing job ! I was very skeptical at first but after trying the demo for about 1h i bought it. There are some differences but the differences sounds like both unit are not calibrated the same. They sounds very close IMO , it really capture the character of the 2600, the snappy env, the osc / filters characteristic etc. I can tell you that in a mix nobody would care. Im gonna keep my 2600M but im glad i have the plugin to create patch etc .0degree wrote: Tue Jul 23, 2024 3:43 pm Has anybody tried comparisons against the actual hardware? Close enough? Not really?

There's a special setting in the plugin's options/preferences where you give it a unique "ID" number, and that will subtly change the characteristics of the synth. That may be that subtle difference you're hearing in the calibration.sovietpop wrote: Tue Jul 23, 2024 5:31 pmI have compared the plugin to my Korg 2600M and i would say Korg did an amazing job ! Then why did their Wavestate which is not an analog emulation also have the same problem which has since been fixed? Nothing sounds "alive" when it's sitting idle since it's making no sound. Again their Odyssey does not suffer from the same issue so I guess they don't want it to sound alive. No, it seems like a bug in the 2600 just as it was in Wavestate.EvilDragon wrote: Tue Jul 23, 2024 2:49 pm Pretty sure they are running everything all the time and then just gating voices. Like on an actual analog synth, which will make things quite alive sounding. My guess is it's probably like that by design. Denormals haven't been a problem for a long time (since today's CPUs have actual features to automatically deal with them).
At any rate adding two 2600's at INIT to an empty project here sends the CPU meter into the yellow at idle so it's not something I'll be reaching for often. At least until Korg fixes the idle CPU issue as they did with Wavestate. They have yet to respond to my support request so at this point it looks like the issue will simply remain unaddressed.
I would. It's a simple 3 Osc synth that yes you can do a bit more with but compared to Avenger for example is it quite simple. It all depends on the individual's definition of simple.

Anyway having spent some time with the collection I am well pleased with the purchase even though I already owned several of the plugins. I bought it primarily to get the Triton/Triton Extreme but several of the other plugins have proven to be enjoyable as well.
Having a lot of fun with the Electribe and Kaoss Pad, Prophecy is a nice synth as well. Micro Korg which just had an update a couple of days ago is nice as well. I used to own a hardware MiniKorg but I'd be lying if I said I could remember how it sounded some 40 years ago so can't compare it to the plugin but it's a nice sounding lead synth in it's own right. At first try the MonoPoly didn't impress me much but I'm getting some juicy fat sounds from it today so my opinion of it has improved.
Does anyone know how to set Patch tags on the MonoPoly? I haven't been able to figure it out yet other than selecting a category then initializing a patch. Going back to add a tag to an already created patch doesn't seem possible or at least I haven't figured it out yet. I don't see a way to access a user manual from the GUI, don't see one installed and could only find one for the older version of the plugin on the internet.

Afaik the Odyssey was a different team. This one was done by Dan's R&D team and I believe the Odyssey was done by the Japanese team.

Well then Dan's team needs to take a look at the idle CPU usage.zvenx wrote: Fri Jul 26, 2024 5:34 pm Afaik the Odyssey was a different team. This one was done by Dan's R&D team and I believe the Odyssey was done by the Japanese team.

Watch the plugin boutique video with Dan. He explains the CPU usage there. Short version: it's a complex model and it runs all voices pretty much all the time based on polyphony and there's 4x OS by default.
It's a great walkthru and worth watching anyway.

Then if it's intended behaviour it is a poorly coded plugin. Even DIVA which is considered by many to be the god of analog only uses 1% cpu at idle.
Anyway the 2600 just got an update as did the Vox and EP 1. The 2600 1.0.2 update did not fix the idle CPU issue so I guess it will remain one of the worst offenders of idle CPU cycles.
Oh well I've got dozens of other synths that are efficiently coded and awesome sounding so not a big deal in the long run.

Still would love to hear a real comparison between hardware and software, but with highly complex patches! I want to know how far this thing can bend before it breaks.

ARP 2600
Avatar KORG app

1.0.2
Improvements to initial selection of the active Set List.
The "Buy" button in the demo version now leads to the correct URL.
Improved synchronization between Arpeggiator, Motion Sequencer, and LFO.
Previously, creating a modulation routing to ADSR/AR and AUX ENV Gate Source or Manual Start caused a crash. This has now been fixed.
