I’m not sure the M filter is supposed to recreate the Microwave rev1 filter. It does sound very good, though. I can confirm that.

Had to research this a bit myself. The M uses an SSI 2144 while the original MW Rev A had CEM 3389 filters

Aha. That's the modern version of the filter in the PPG Wave 2.2 and 2.3. Only the Wave 2 had a CEM filter (3320). So the inspiration for the M seems tp be the PPG. Personally i like the SSM filters with wavetables better. Did not like it in the Wave 2, not a big fan of the MW's filters.

The SSI synths I've played have a dullness to them that my SSM synths don't have. It's hard to say if the chips are the reason but the dullness is consistent.

They probably went with the SSI because it's readily available (cant recall if anyone makes a CEM3320 knockoff, maybe Cool Audio????). Doepfer somehow got ahold of a stash of 2044s because that's what in my SSM filter in my modular, LOVE that thing, kinda wish that's what was in my Rev 2.

All the popular curtis and ssm chips have been either re-issued, cloned, or both.
The 3320 is reissued, cloned by alfa RPAr and by Coolaudio.
Price per item might be a reason (idk), or the format the chips can be deliverd in.

Post

Not that easy to get Cool Audio chips. I was able to buy 100 of their BBD’s from their service center but that was it.

Post

I just buy diy quantities, but curtis and Alfa rpar are easily attainable.
Erica synths has many rpar models in stock.
By reissued i meant that Curtis is in business again and sells the originals.

Oh! That’s great to hear!

Still, I’m guessing a reissued microwave would just be a rack version of the M, maybe even using the same PCB’s. SSI’s being surface mount is a big part of their appeal.

well, perhaps there IS a god of synthchips:
AS3320 РDIP-18 (300 mil body)
AS3320D SOIC-18 (300 mil body)
AS3320F QFN-24L (4*4 mm 0.5 mm)

Slightly different, yet also pretty close I would say. The M is surely a great Synth!

Nice demo. Maybe not the best material too bring out the differences.

Post

At least I still could hear the Difference; yet also liked the M actually, which was similar.

Most of the Youtube stuff is 'not the best material' for me anyway, to be honest.
