For each wave table cycle, should the first *and last* of the 2048 samples be zero, or only the first?

Post

Just make a zero crossing between last and first sample. Having either one be zero does this. As a convention, having the first sample be close to zero is good, as a phase reset on note start is click free.

Thanks Urs! So then I suppose a VST wavetable, as used by hive for instance, is just a an 'audio sample' of constant frequency starting at a zero crossing and limited to 2048 samples per cycle and 256 cycles.

Yes. Except "of constant frequency": A wavetable has no frequency, it only represents the waveform(s).
