Ain't there a PC lurking inside the thrift and stuff?

Ok, gotta shift that all to the left... :?

Now, the developer tools have left the shop, so they should be here shortly...

Hiya,

after more than a week of just using the PC for tv & video, the developer tools finally arrived! - Time to get started :D

So, I finally crept through the hassles and odds of actually using the XP desktop rather than the Media Center (which works neatly with the remote control :hihi: ). But I have to say one thing: I do already hate XP. The installation process was preceeded by installing, updating and configuring some Norton Anti-everything shit which required 3 restarts - OMG -, and it was accompanied by a buttload of strange windows popping up, inconsistent feel and all. Imagine, one window asks to insert a new disk out of 7 (which is a highly manual task on XP...), and after inserting it, some other window pops up, asking what I want to do, before I could click "continue" in the install window. :bang:

So, this is windows

Nevertheless, you can't imagine what a relief it was that Yours Confusedly went through that hassle without a blue screen of death (I'm used to that from my old Win95 days...). Vice-versa, the installation - as much sweat as it has drained out of my now-dry skin - was 100% successful 8)

Oki. Next. I have no clue how this Visual Stupido C++ works and what it takes to do anything meaningful :help: - So I downloaded a large & neat cross-platform graphics library which I got successfully working on the Mac. I had some hassle setting it up and double-clicking the right file (What is a project and what is a workspace?!? WTF?!?), but then...

... it worked!!!

I got all examples compiled and running.

Phewww...

... now, this is really something!

Next week's update: Urs is gonna compile his first VST on PC

Cheers,

;) Urs

Welcome to the dark side Urs. As a long time denizen it sounds like you may have bought a brand name PC and installed the crap they gave you with it. (Muahahaha!)

Most of us PC guys would not do this in a pink fit - it is part of the oath. We either gather up a pile of bits including an OS disk and put it together ourselves and do a clean uncluttered install of XP or we pay someone to do this for us. (If you want something done right do it yourself.)

You would want to be sure that you don't just have a "recovery" disk but rather a full WinXP disk in case you need to do a reinstall at some future point.

Anyway I am amazed that you already have things compiling etc without having had to sacrifice your firstborn and bite off a goats testicle -- sounds like you just turned it on and it worked.

Amazing ...

;-)

You know, that was part of the plan.

I bought an all-in-wonder solution from trusty Siemens, because I don't know a shit about Windope and PCs. And - of course - it came with a remote control for the tv/video stuff...

Yeah, hrhrhr, it's got a recovery disk, but I'm sure I'll treat it so soft that I'll never have to recover. I will install 5 applications: Firefox (done!), Visual C++ (done!), SX 2, Live 4 and Sudden Strike 2 (my fav game, bought 2 years ago, when I had access to PCs in my former job at university). After that I will not touch the system again... and I won't do emails, no no...

(C&C Generalz is available for Mac btw.)

Well, maybe I'll install the Atmel AVR tools if I'll ever have the lust for designing midi controller hardware again... but that's highly improbably... was fun in the past... but building hardware... dunno...

At least, this was a fun midi control box, with it's 200 LEDs:

The assembly was way beyond ircks and quircks of windowism, so I guess I can handle that :D

the difference between a project and workspace
i believe is
the project is the collection of modules and dependencies and build instructions
in VC6 this is the dsw (workspace) and dsp (project) file
in VC7 this is the vcproj file and sln (solution) file

the workspace is the current state of the files loaded into the various windows and such

i just went through a week of moving a build from VC6 to VC7 -- took 4 days to figure that out -- but I adapt slowly -- prior to that, we'd moved cleaned the code to compile and link in VC7.

good luck

I know this is a good thing for so many potential U-he users, but that thing on your desk somehow saddens me.
