Serum launched with a 33% discount ($129) and doesn't have sales. The full price of $189 hasn't changed since 2014 (equivalent of $251 today). People buying Serum now to get the free upgrade would be upset to discover it would have been cheaper to wait and buy Serum 2 at its introductory discount (if it has one), so my assumption is that he'll price things so that it doesn't really matter when you buy.
However, that would mean Serum 2 will either be the same price as Serum and have no intro discount, or it would be well over $200 full price with an intro discount to bring it to $189.

Did any of their post-Serum releases have introductory sales? Could it be that they only decided on the "no sales" policy after Serum's release, and plan on sticking to it?Vortifex wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2024 10:58 am Serum launched with a 33% discount ($129) and doesn't have sales. Whats with the pricing dilema, Serum is a great synth and v2 is just an extra addition as v1 is incredibly powerful modern synth. Many of the synths that come out barely do what Serum does. Imo the price is right.

Almost every other synth in that price range allows license transfers and has periodic sales. Those are two of the main reasons why I haven't bought it, even though some of my favorite artists have used it.Lbdunequest wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2024 1:09 pm Whats with the pricing dilema, Serum is a great synth and v2 is just an extra addition as v1 is incredibly powerful modern synth. Wonder if any of the Serum 2 factory presets will have MPE already mapped by default. Or an option to automatically map MPE press to aftertouch or Slide/Y axis/MPE Timbre to modwheel or a macro.

That makes me think you are a collector not a uaer. Having no ability to transfer the licence or a sale doesnt change the sound.Ou_Tis wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2024 2:14 pmAlmost every other synth in that price range allows license transfers and has periodic sales. But when you have many synths that sound very similar and have similar functionality, factors like price and whether resale is an option make the difference. And as I said, there are also other factors: other synths with similar wavetable capabilities also have additional synthesis types, many more options, and in some cases far more presets designed for use with MPE controllers and better customizability of MPE curves for each parameter mapping.Lbdunequest wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2024 2:55 pm

What Serum has going for it is the "lots of famous artists have used/use it and it has zillions of third party presets available" (though few if any geared towards MPE afaik).

The synth is popular because it's easy to use, sounds great, and has many third-party preset banks if you don't want to create your own. The fact that many artists use it also contributes to its popularity. However, the primary reason people use it is simply that it's a great synth. If you don't find it appealing, that's fine, but license transfer and sales issues have nothing to do with the synth's quality. It's a personal preference, unrelated to musicality and more about individual character traits like wanting a good deal.Ou_Tis wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2024 3:20 pmBut when you have many synths that sound very similar and have similar functionality, factors like price and whether resale is an option make the difference. Best-in-class (IMO) wavetable editor as well. Also it preceded most of the similar synths that you're probably referring to, which is not a perk of the synth but I'd guess is a big contributing factor to its popularity.Ou_Tis wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2024 3:20 pmBut when you have many synths that sound very similar and have similar functionality, factors like price and whether resale is an option make the difference. Then stop buying synths? be more selective about them?Ou_Tis wrote: Sat Sep 14, 2024 3:20 pmBut when you have many synths that sound very similar and have similar functionality, factors like price and whether resale is an option make the difference. All the sales around are just to prey on our consumer addictions, a small dose of serotonin for your brain to feel nice.
For years I have "limited" my self to a few synths , plus the ones included in my DAW, and when feeling the urge to buy something just launch a couple and see I haven't explored them fully or they can do the same already, so why bother buying more?
