For what I'm seeing (which is great for sure), those new racks are just MUX's front GUI?
It would be possible to insert any other MUX with its GUI? or maybe latter...?
Just curious.
Great work Jo

New racks are a HUGE boon. Variable height is exciting, especially for mixing, and variable length inserts is something I've been wishing for a very long time. Excellent! I'll play around with this after my work!

EDIT: ah, it's not available yet lol. I will be patient

So you can't just have a "Mixer Strip" as a rack desk mux, then, it has to have a Rack Slot module? Makes sense as it's the Rack Module that has the ins/outs for the full signal chain in place with default "through" routing.

Will there be a shortcut to position the mixer strip between the slots as there has always been?

Curious for your thoughts & feelings about this.
Great news!

As I use MuLab mostly as a subhost routing playground for 3d-party plugins, I use racks much and highly interested in more slots (there are many cases when 6 is too few for me) and more routing flexibility. More complex and flexible multichannel routing inside a rack would be a real "signal path paradise" for me. Thank you for that great idea! Looking forward for having a chance to beta-test this option!

The very default will be 8 slots because there was a general bit of grumble that 6 slots was too few.
But you can make your own default rack, eg. with 6 slots, and save it as "New Rack.Mux".
That special preset will be used whenever clicking the + rack button.
Will it be compatible with MUX front panels created in the current version?

Well i have been experimenting that way, but it turned out that making the rack GUI itself fully editable (including slot placement etc) would make it all too techy/too complex, especially as the racks are intended for easy musical creation joy. It's essential that the racks preserve their easy feel they have now. And so i tried to find an optimal balance between instant ease of use like the current racks and flexible modular power. Experimenting and prototyping around that balance did cost quite some dev time, but i'm hopeful it's fine now.

That said i kept things open and there are 2 points where it could make sense to include a MUX front panel inside the rack view:
1) I'm thinking about adding the option to switch the rack audio mixer strip to a MUX itself. That would make it possible to add, for example, an EQ, or a Spectrum Analyzer in the pre-post fader section, and switching the pre-post fader indicator would thus also put that MUX at the right point in the rack signal flow. This is one of the todos i still want to check out the next days.
2) As the rack is a MUX itself you could make a front panel for that rack MUX (apart from the existing rack slots) and this front panel could be added to the rack view too. I'm not yet sure if this would make much sense as i guess such rack front panel would be dependent on what's inserted in the slots, no? And so switching what's in the slots would invalidate such front panel.

Combining 1 + 2 could lead to a quite complex rack editor:
  • The slots
  • The pre-post fader indicator
  • The fader section, be it simple as now, be it a MUX front panel with extra controls
  • The 'global' rack front panel
As mentioned above, i'm gonna prototype making the fader section a MUX Modular itself.

Hope this answers your question.

In the current prototype, yes that's true.
But maybe it makes sense to let the user ultimately decide whether a MUX should be included in the rack desk or not, by enabling a "Rack" switch for that MUX.
In that case it could make sense to add a MUX front panel for that rack, and that would be viewable from the rack desk. Just some brainstorming here.
Will there be a shortcut to position the mixer strip between the slots as there has always been?
Not sure what you mean with this, sorry.
Pls elaborate.

Still need to do some doublechecking here, but existing MUX front panels should stay the same, with one little exception: Front panels that use a rack desk may have a slightly different height. It's minimal and i don't think it will hurt.

Could we have an undo/redo toolbar option please. Would be much quicker than going to the Project menu every time.

Turning rax-into-mux increases flexibility & design consistency which is always an improvement but yes, must maintain the 'easy feel'
It seems the main difference is the RaxMux lets you drag/drop and re-sequence mux modules from a front panel, which easifies workflow.

The proposal to dock other front panels in the rack area routing system has real potential. Maybe... design some standard rack front panel 'templates' with parameter or macro knobs, xy or event pads, etc to quickly link with modules and hide/show. A mixer strip could be one preset. We could also link rack panel templates to vst plugin parameters, like Ableton Racks.

The "<" marks the point in the signal chain where the mixer strip is inserted in the slot chain. Anything before the mark is "pre-fader", anything after is "post-fader".

Sure. But i was confused by your words "a shortcut to position the mixer strip between the slots as there has always been".
Such shortcut did not yet exist, and is also not planned, as it feels like overkill to me to add a shortcut for positioning the pre-post fader indicator in the middle, the more as you would have to make sure that rack has keyboard focus, hence a click is necessary and so that click can simply do the job already.

It's not planned to add such specific toolbar.
IF toolbar(s) would be added, they will surely be customizable so that each user can choose what's in there and what not.
About a fast way to Undo / Redo: Why don't you use the fast key shortcuts Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y ?

A toolbar would be much more preferable as I'm not a fan of hot keys. Just too darn many to remember over so many apps!

Those 2 are universal. Nothing to remember really...
