I cant hear my very quiet pc because of my aircon. but then again I rarely use mics.

Thread reminds me... I still have a loaded Mac Pro 5.1 upstairs I need to sell :hihi:

Untill Apple release a Studio Mac with a single version OS that is updated for 5-10 years rather than releasing a new OS (seems like every year) im not going back to Mac.

except when they are, of course.

faster than the M2 Max in the Mac Studio, or the M3 Pro, for £400 less, and completely fanless...

Both my PCs are almost silent - you can't hear them from a couple of feet away and definitely not on any recording.

I have a Mac Studio, but it's not any faster for audio production and I can easily add more disks to the PCs, in the case direct via SATA.

They're all good enough but the customisation of PCs still wins.

If I *had* to use a laptop, I'd likely go for a mac, but in a home studio, PC desktop wins IMHO.

The M2 Ultra 24 Core is more comparable to the Ryzen 9 7900. Both desktop CPUs (the M2 Max counts as a laptop CPU). The M2 Ultra 24 Core is even slightly better than the Ryzen in terms of performance (multithreading, the differences in single threading are rather small). However, the prices at Apple are of course hefty... A Mac Studio with M2 Ultra will certainly cost more than twice as much (I estimate $4000-5000).

I built a PC . amd 7600x with amd 7600 gpu . I got gigabyte mobo on a silent fan curve , the GPU fans aren't loud for a DAW can't hear them . I also have ryzen master for cpu out on eco mode . PC is really quiet. I won't ever buy Apple . My CPU cooler is thermal right 1x120 and so are my PC fans all 120s I think I have 5 total fans and the GPU fans and PSU fans . It's really quiet .

I’m just on a MacBook Pro now. I use a USB-C hub with power in and HDMI out when I want to use it like a desktop. It’s pretty cool. I plug in a single USB-C from the hub and I instantly have my 4k monitor, keyboard + mouse, MIDI controller, audio device + monitors, and AC power.

The only difference from a desktop at that point is the shape of the computer. But then I can unplug it and take it with me, and it is more powerful than my last Windows DAW.

Pretty sure I will never buy a desktop again.

What about when you need more storage ?

Post

I've got a MBP with a 2TB SSD.

I don't need extra storage but if I did it's got an SDXC card slot so I'd use that.

32" external monitor, Kensington Thunderbolt 4 Dual 4k Docking Station with everything connected to it. Great, versatile computer setup (I need portability too, so laptop it is).

Well, the customisation options on PCs are a double-edged sword. Since I've been using a Mac, I've changed my mind a little.
The many different hardware configurations are the reason why Windows keeps having problems. I've also had bluescreens on Windows 10 because some third-party hardware drivers were badly programmed... the well-known problems that occur from time to time with USB hardware, devices are not recognised, you have to try different ports, etc... whether my external synths work in Cubase has always been a matter of luck. Absolutely reliable on the Mac, always works and it seems that the whole audio system is more stable and allows lower latencies than ASIO (but only my subjective perception. I haven't done any benchmarks).

I have plenty of storage. In addition to the MacBook’s SSD (which ships with up to 8TB) I also have a 1TB Transcend JetDrive SSD card installed as a separate physical drive, a 2TB external USB-C SSD backup drive, and a USB-C hard drive bay with 3.5/2.5 SATA slots and about a dozen HDs and SSDs I’ve harvested from desktops over the years.

So, I’m good.

Oh yeah, and I use almost exclusively physical modeling (Pianoteq, SWAM, MODO DRUM) so I don’t need TBs of sample libraries.

true. They are also awesome if you are professional on a budget that knows clients depend on you and you only update when you HAVE to. And you hardly ever HAVE to.

This is what I don't like about macs.

SAMSUNG 870 QVO SATA III SSD 8TB 2.5" $665

Apple MacBook pro 8tb SSD upgrade from 1tb SSD
+$2200

The one they use might be better spec than the avg example I used, even then I bet a comparable
one is less than half the price, probably even the same one. I doubt that apple manufacturers their
own SSDS or the bulk of the components in a mac. It was just the last intel generation where you
could build a hackintosh with a GB mobo that was pretty much one to one component-wise with
a mac, that's the only reason you could even make one, they could work because it was the same
HW...

Apple is hilariously over-charging, denying that just doesn't make any sense to me.

*Honestly, it's too bad Uli Behringer isn't into making computers. That would be f*ing hilarious.

I built my own PCs for a couple decades. I never once was able to reuse parts.

With a new CPU come a new chipset and socket which means a new motherboard, along with a new “silent” CPU cooler size and a new DDR type. And significant advances in SSDs and GPUs means you’re going to want to upgrade those as well.

There may even be a new USB spec, which means a new case with the latest ports.

So you end up building an entirely new computer every time. Might as well get a Mac at that point.

Apple is bait and switch . Once you start your order and you have to add a bigger SSD and Ram your screwed price wise , they are ripping you off .I'm very happy with my PC build , I had MacBooks that I added ram and hdd in the past and now you can't do it yourself , it's all soldered in .
