I don't think that the look of the GUI is the main issue with Reaper - the real problem is that
a) they keep adding and adding and adding stuff without ever cleaning up,
b) settings can be in at least three different places (with all of these being pretty messy), and last but in no way the least
c) they tend to come up with complex and outright convoluted solutions to relative simple problems. They then try to iron out issues (that exist due to this convolution) by adding further options and exceptions most of which the die-hard fans often don't even know what they're about.
There is a lot to what you say.

#1 is functionality, you should be able to do anything
#2. well thought out and intuitive is secondary

My personal priority would be absolutely the other way around,
because I need to be able to reach features quickly and painlessly otherwise chances are I won't bother.
Reaper's new comping system is proof of that. I still use the old method (which is kind of a pita in and of itself) because the new one is just too weird and too much of a pita for me.

In such a case added functionality might actually result in less functionality.

I agree, and I believe that most of the current Studio One users fancy its clean and (for the most part) intuitive UI. That’s at least what clicked with me back in the days of S1 v4. And while I’m quite unhappy with the new direction of the licensing scheme, I don’t see the need (yet) to switch my DAW.

Was there any new soundsets that came after 4.6 Pro when you upgraded beyond that version?

Sorry, I could've saved you that time:

True believers know mystical, cryptic spells that will enable Reaper to do what Studio One does automatically.

Speaking as someone who just upgraded from v4 to v6, the UI is still just as clean and intuitive.

I can‘t really remember. Maybe one or two? Definitely they added the new impulse responses for the OpenAIR2 reverb.

But I can live with that. I found the soundsets for the most part uninspiring, except for drums and the bread & butter palette for Presence XT. For more exotic stuff I still have Reason as RRP with tons of ReFills. :)

Post

Yeah, I don't install any of the content, beyond what an instance of Presence XT might want when I load up a new MIDI file. And Presence XT does an amazing job with GeneralMIDI, sometimes it sounds so close to the original that it's hardly worth tinkering with, although I tinker anyway because I don't necessarily want it to sound exactly like the original.

Anyway, I've calmed right down about this now. Somehow my stability issues have all but disappeared, for no discernable reason, and Presonus have actually been really good at letting me know exactly which plugins are causing the problems. They got back to me within 24 hours and I was able to have a bit of back and forth with them in real time, as they'd answer within half-an-hour or so once we got the thread started.

Unfortunately, the biggest culprits are Ujam plugins that I use all the time but Ujam's support is an order of magnitude worse than PreSonus, so I am still waiting on a response from them. They wouldn't want to leave it too long or I will have purged all their plugins and they'll have lost a customer.

Anyway, I've decided to pay for this upgrade, as it's about due anyway, and see how it goes from there.

I can dig it.

Or maybe some yacht rock. That would make sense, wouldn't it?

Very kind. The important words in what I said were "over this" - absolutely everything else still shits me to tears.

Yachts had one brilliant album, then went to shit, which is another thing that pisses me off - you're doing good work, why wouldn't you stay the course? (Which is also a yachting term.)
