I'll always take up an opportunity to heap praise on Bazille. One of my favorite instruments of all time. It still surprises me after all these years.
Has it been 15 years since that first Alpha was released?

I want to like Bazille, but I don’t understand the oscillators. That’s my only problem. If someone could not assume that we understand FM synthesis and provide useful tutorials that don’t assume we understand everything, I think there would be more sales. I really want to know and understand how the oscillators work—that’s my only difficulty—not the subtractive and modular aspects.

(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

Don't feel bad, "FM" is relatively confusing until you dive into technical aspects. Yamaha in an effort to make it easier to comprehend, used phase modulation in the DX7, not frequency modulation (see the Manual, page 24). So in Bazille if you want that type, you should be modulating the Phase parameter, leaving the modulator on one of the "PM" options. This video discusses that and the other options:audiojunkie wrote: Sun Oct 06, 2024 9:15 pm I want to like Bazille, but I don’t understand the oscillators. That’s my only problem. If you really want to know how FM works, with regards to sidebands, linear FM, and more, this video playlist explains well with visualizations:
As the CM video notes, the default patch has PD turned all the way up. So if you're experimenting/learning about phase modulation, you'll want to turn PD all the way down.

I remember when starting to dive into VCV Rack, how I thought "oh, the possibilities are endless! Now I'll probably never use Bazille anymore."
Well, years have passed. I still love Bazille very dearly and use it all the time. Never use VCV Rack anymore.
(nothing wrong with VCV Rack, I just don't use it.)
