First, very impressed with the MuLab9, and looking forward to 10 (looking nice).
I'm still getting up to speed with things, having come from older versions. Just looking for a nudge in the right direction.
So, I am right that you cannot target a track towards an object outside of the composer? Instead, you create a custom Mux and then load it into a composer rack. Or have I missed the boat completely?
I've also noticed racks loaded into Mux no-lonnger show up in composers rack panel.
Targetting object in the Mux area?

A composer is, itself, a MUX component with inputs and outputs. You can link the composer to any appropriate other component, of course. But only through those connectors it exposes.
Now, if you want one track to target an external component:
* Open the project modular area so you can see the composer module and its current connections - probably to your hardware outs
* Open up the composer modular area (Yeah!!)
* Add Module -> Inputs/Outputs -> let's say Audio Out
* As if by magic, a new Composer output appears in the out project modular area, just begging you to connect it somewhere exciting
* Wait, wait - stay in the Composer and get that track targeting your new output -- add your track, set the target to the new output
* OK, now! Back to the project modular view and you're away

I guess that answers the question, "Why are there two modular area icons?".
You really miss a lot, if you don't follow versions, after a hand full of years.
Nice that I can use it the same as always; but now with more routing potential.

And, naturally, you can route the audio out from one track in Composer 1 to the audio in of another track in Composer 2 like this, say with a sequence controlling an effect... which means you can run two separate timelines:
