I can't even guarantee my own life for 30 more years much less be concerned about a 30 year plugin license so whatever. If I can't come up with enough money to buy it again in 30 years if necessary I've got problems way beyond these plugins. It's a non thing to me. lol.

Hope I will still be alive in 30 years time.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the future they start releasing plugins at different prices for different license periods.
Would you like to buy our new synthesizer? $200 for a 5 year license. If after 5 years you still use it, buy it again for 200 bucks. Or we have a unique advantageous offer for you: a 10-year discounted license for only $300.

Yes, and the aim will no doubt be to reduce the license period down to every 1 month. Of course it won't be marketed as subscription, it'll be "frequent ownership". If they can get it down to every day...

It’s just weird. It’d be one thing if they were pledging to keep the licensing system or online component running for x years after which the plugin will stop working. This is more like “if you own this plugin for a third of a century we’re going to come to your house and forcibly remove your it from your 20 year old legacy PC, and probably kick you in the shins while we’re there.”dblock wrote: Fri Nov 15, 2024 6:10 pm I can't even guarantee my own life for 30 more years much less be concerned about a 30 year plugin license so whatever. I suspect the real reason for some form of time limit to the license is to get around the horrible 2012 CJEU ruling in UsedSoft v. Oracle, so they don't have to permit license resale.
Same reason the move towards subscription models began a decade ago.

This is starting to enter the realm of subscription again……. We ALL love subscriptions…….Alexander137 wrote: Fri Nov 15, 2024 6:21 pm I wouldn't be surprised if in the future they start releasing plugins at different prices for different license periods.

That case had zero impact on subscription, subscription was always coming, like it or not, developers ALL believe that subscription by whatever name you call it is the only way for them to achieve the capitalist dream of growth.jamcat wrote: Sat Nov 16, 2024 4:28 am I suspect the real reason for some form of time limit to the license is to get around the horrible 2012 CJEU ruling in UsedSoft v. Any changes to non perpetual licenses or forced subscription changes would immediately influence a cull of every item of software in my inventory that is not used with great regularity. To just the most important/effective to reduce the impact, especially on any forced subs/licence shortening practices.
Everyone would likely do the same and audio plug in sales would be decimated forever.
It would be an extremely foolish and self defeating move for the software industry.
Personally I will now never buy an IK product again, I don't use them anyway despite ownership of a few, all superceded. Thanks for the heads up.
Choose what you use with care. as far as you can know what might happen and what companies you feel you can rely on.Which can now be a moving target of course.
Glad you brought this up so consumers can keep an eye on this detrimental move.
