I tend to think the best sounding synths are much simpler instruments, mostly emulations. The best sound quality I have ever heard goes to Korg's ARP 2600. It is simply divine. bx-oberhausen and ARP Odyssey aren't far behind and I really rate the sound quality of Cherry Audio's Atomika and GForce's SEM and OB-E. I think Legend HZ also sounds incredible but it's let down by that hopeless ladder filter. I really like the way Tone2's Saurus sounds, as well. ANA, Spire and Thorn are a different class of instrument that I don't really use as much.

As far as emulations go I love the ARP 2600 Arturia's, haven't heard Korg's and to me Oddity 2 was one of the best synths I have heard. I, for some reason leave out the emulations for the "favorite synth" threads- but these two have given me moments of "this is the best I've heard".BONES wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 4:27 am I tend to think the best sounding synths are much simpler instruments, mostly emulations. The patch "Boomer" in Arturia's ARP 2600 totally blows me away, I love it, even though I know you think the Arturia Em's lack- I have to go and listen to the Korg's...

Thanks for the tip !Phil Sonic Academy wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 9:08 pmTry the 4pole filter in the other filter menu… some less upfront filters in there… the modelled ones have a bit of natural drive. So the fill a mix out more.Geomystery wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 8:42 pm I use ANA2 since 2020 in many of my tracks. I love UI and sound. Sometimes I hate it's thickness. I mean it's not easy to make it sound transparent.

I have the first version and thought it was a bit meh, so I never tried version 2. Is it a significant upgrade?
There's a big time sale now for Ana 2, so I'm giving it another look.

Never tried ANA the first rendition. ANA 2 is top notch. Here's a quick video I thought might be a good showcase.jsp1979 wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 8:49 pm I have the first version and thought it was a bit meh, so I never tried version 2. Is it a significant upgrade?

The GUI is a bit cramped for my liking, and the fonts a bit small when scaled for a 14" laptop display. That's probably the main reason I reach for Dune instead, but ANA is a great synth.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

I use ANA 2.5 on a desktop and two laptops so you can use it on at least three (I don't remember their limit but it's at least three machines).ukm wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 9:49 pm I'm interested but I don't see any information about copy protection.
I'll have to use it on my studio computer and my two live laptops (one for backup).

I've had it installed on at least three computers simultaneously for several years without any problems.ukm wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 9:49 pmI'm interested but I don't see any information about copy protection.

IMO Arturia's 2600 sounds "decent-good", but it lacks a bit of the "heft" of modern analog emulations. It does have some really great patches in the preset library, tho, as you noted. It's completely capable of making fantastic music. With its flexible patching architecture it can make a huge variety of sounds and might be the only synth you need.twal wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 5:08 am The patch "Boomer" in Arturia's ARP 2600 totally blows me away, I love it, even though I know you think the Arturia Em's lack- I have to go and listen to the Korg's...
A well-behaved signature.

I like using things like Current and Phaseplant when I wanna build weird shit. Emulations though are really nice because its very easy to just crank out custom presets. I also know that some real bangers are coming out soon in 2025 that are going to be sick as hell.BONES wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 4:27 am I tend to think the best sounding synths are much simpler instruments, mostly emulations.
