I have been using Tracktion for the last couple of days and really like it, but last night I hit a major problem.

When I record midi, I only get every couple of notes (dropping most of the info). I tried real time, using a project with just this track, etc. Using the same hardware, I can record midi no problem using Home Studio 2004. I am using an alesis dm pro connected to a usb midisport 2X4. OS: Win2K professional. Please Help.

I use a midisport 2*2 with no problems..

Maybe check you have the latest drivers / re-install?

I believe I have the latest drivers - I will check them tonight. But, that still does not explain why it works great under cakewalk HS2004. This would lead me to believe that the drivers are installed correctly,

Are the audio settings correct in Tracktion? (in the settings page).
I've had problems before and have had to switch ASIO drivers to get decent performance.

I was able to record audio tracks no problem. I am currently only using a turtle beach santa cruz for audio. I believe this uses wdm drivers.

I've had performance issues with WDM and Tracktion, thankfully now I'm using an M-Audio Delta 44 and with ASIO Tracktion rocks! I also have an Edirol PCR-80 feeding into my motherboards MPU-401 and have never seen a dropped note... Win2K Pro here as well, with Service Pack 4...

Have you checked the usual suspects - make sure there are no resident antivirus programs running, no extraneous stuff going while you're sequencing, etc.?

My win2k is pretty tweaked for audio (alot of services disabled, no anti-virus, etc.). I am still not sure why the audio card drivers would effect midi. I am using an external midisport and this was the only track being recorded (acutally it was the only track in the project). I too would like to get a delta-44 (works well on linux)

I'm out of ideas, then. :( I can't imagine the audio card drivers having anything to do with it, but I'm kind of reaching here in an attempt to see if we can't get your problem sorted!

Hopefully someone else will chime in soon...

Are there any other MIDI devices present? I'm thinking specifically of MoBo on-board MIDI.. try disabling everything else?

Might be stupid, but have you tried a different USB port?

Clutching at straws I'm afraid.. :?

well if it works in sonar then yr midi in must be fine have u tried a diff driver in traction u say asio is not available with yr sound card try a diffirent 1 that is if no joy try putting up yr latinecy if still no joy then dont ask me :D

I appreciate all of your suggestions. I've tried them all, even disabiling the midisport and just using the santa cruz's midi input. Acts the same way. Tried again in cakewalk and works perfectly. I even re-installed the drivers - still the same. Any other ideas??? I tried disabling all audio devices and just kept a midi one, but Tracktion would not let me record.

Last night I installed asio4all and it greatly improved my latency (from 50 ms to around 5 ms), awesome little program. Unfortunately, this did not help my midi problem. I did hook up a keyboard and midi recorded fine. Could it be a problem recording on channel 10(alesis dm pro) vs. the keyboard on channel 1. Or do you think the dmpro is sending out more info that is not rendered properly in tracktion???

Darren,
Can you try something for me? Please record some midi in Cakewalk from your DMPro and export the midi file. See if the Midi file imports properly into Tracktion. If it does, please email the midi to techmail@mackie.com and put "Please Forward to Ben Olswang" in the subject and write a little description in the body about what is happening and that I told you to do this.

I'm pretty sure the DMPro is spitting out some really short (almost zero length) midi notes. I've heard this reported from another user that they were having problems with their electronic drums not recording properly in Tracktion either.

Thanks,

Ben
