X-Verb is like 3 light years ahead of the Flexverb which sounds pretty bad and generic to me.comfortablynick wrote: Fri Dec 06, 2024 9:31 pm Not surprising since the algorithm in X-Verb was coded by Relab.

Yeah, it would be good to know why SSL dropped X-Verb and in which Relab plugin its code possibly is living on.
Something else: which reverbs are best suited to simulate open spaces? I seem to recall that some years ago the TC VSS3 was often referred to in that context, but it was mono to stereo so I guess the use for outdoors sound was mostly in soundtrack, not music.
Again I prefer 32-bit versions. There are several reasons - just one is that in some instances they were simply better. The updated, exclusively 64-bit VSS3 was said by many users to sound worse than its predecessor, and the FlexVerb vs. X-Verb discussion is another example. Anyway, there are still brands that maintain or even release stuff in 32-bit - Melda & United, Blue Cat, D16... so if anyone knows which of those has good "outdoor" sounds, please let me know.

32 bit plugins have nothing to do with audio quality or the bit depth of the audio going through them. If I remember correctly the VST standard calls for a 32-bit floating point input and output.
Anyway, get a convolution based reverb for all your "outdoor sounding needs. There are tons of Impulse responses captured in outdoor places at various distances. You'll be able to find plenty of 32-bit plugins that will load impulses. Buy an old copy of altiverb (before they released a 64 bit build). You should be able to get a deal and their library is super good. The DSP for convolution is simple and damn near indistinguishable between implementations.

Thanks for the tips about convolution plugins. Will try. - I didn't say that 32-bit per se had anything to with audio quality. In the examples I mentioned it was a matter of audible changes made during an update (VSS3) and a complete replacement for the product behind the license (FlexVerb).

I only read this last page. It seemed like you were implying that 32 bit (format) plugins sounded different in general. My bad.Sound_Bear wrote: Sat Dec 07, 2024 1:39 am Thanks for the tips about convolution plugins. Will try. - I didn't say that 32-bit per se had anything to with audio quality. Anyway the best "outdoor" reverbs I've ever heard wire impulse based. They are very common in post production libraries. There are quite a few that sound guys have made and distributed for free. I have a pack on one of my hard drives somewhere.
Good luck

I like the sound of Antress Modern Flash Verb, but could never figure out how to access three of its controls that were officially listed (quotes from the blogspot page: Reverb time (off to 10 secs), Room size (box to infinity), Pre-delay time (off to 2 secs)). Were they not actually implemented? If they were, what mouse gymnastics do I need to perform?
Edit: To clarify, I'm assuming that the time and size parameters weren't actually meant to exist as separate controls and were just meant as descriptions of the existing "Level" and "Room" knobs, but the mention of a pre-delay control makes me wonder if there's some weird secret-pixel-like way of accessing that and possibly those other two as refinements of the visible knobs.

I just purchased Cinematic Rooms Pro. And honestly it's the best reverb in my collection at this moment.

I haven't demoed REV6000 yet so I'm going to give it a spin. I'm curious if it will give me anything over Cinematic Rooms Pro. It seems like they are supposed to be the same type of reverb.
I saw a bManic post about u-he Protoverb, which I had forgotten about. He seems to think highly of it.

If you want algorithmic but realistic, then Cinematic Rooms Pro is very hard to beat. And if you want the TC System 6k stuff, then why not buy it from the actual company who made it? Not sure if it's on sale any more but it was just a few days ago still.
U-He Protoverb is amazing as a creative thing where you just randomize things a bunch of times (or after a while you learn how the underlying seed system works) and get some awesome to absolutely whacky results!

Speaking of U-He Protoverb, here you can download 50 presets I made for it (well, randomized curated!).

Relab emulates the VSS6.1 algo (surround only but converted to stereo). TC native only have the VSS3 and 4 algos. But yeah for realistic reverb CRP still has an edge here.bmanic wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 6:45 pm If you want algorithmic but realistic, then Cinematic Rooms Pro is very hard to beat. And Early Reflections in CRP are incredibly great!jtsterays wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 6:51 pmRelab emulates the VSS6.1 algo (surround only but converted to stereo). 480 for sure. Go to the routing tab in LX480 and choose the last one then tweak different settings for A & B. You will get some of lushest reverb ever that 7HP just can't compete.Alexander_D wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 7:30 pmAnd Early Reflections in CRP are incredibly great!jtsterays wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 6:51 pmRelab emulates the VSS6.1 algo (surround only but converted to stereo).
