The Death of Music Genres

Did genres disappear because there is no collective zeitgeist for music anymore?...is it because its not consumed communally?...is it because it's consumed individually personalized by algorithms?
To the video, me and my mom were just listening to a bunch of bossa nova records on vinyl and had a similar convo

"I know so many people that have never heard a Taylor Swift song."
Rick just said the quiet part out loud. Everyone has heard of her, but who actually has heard her music? I guess primary school girls have. But anyone else? Not me. Not anyone I know.
She's the biggest pop star on the planet or something, and yet you don't hear her music anywhere. Could you imagine ANYONE not knowing any songs by Madonna or Michael Jackson in 1985?

I've not heard any Taylor Swift, but I've also not heard any Ed Sheeran songs in the last 5+ years either. I dont listen to mainstream radio / YouTube / streaming.
It's dead easy not to hear a song by someone.
I'll watch the video later, but, considering that The Wire had an article about cross-pollination of genres due to file sharing when reviewing the gig that would become Black Vomit by Wolf Eyes & Anthony Braxton, released in 2006, its been a while.
I've never heard a Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Beatles, or Rolling Stones album all the way through. Different to actually saying I've never heard anything by them, admittedly, but I've never owned anything by them, and I'm pretty old.
I bet if you went into a clothes shop you would hear Taylor Swift being played

Almost sounds like music broadcasting/publishing/access might actually have changed since 1985. Who knew that, eh?
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

I thought that was very interesting. I've not heard Rick Beato before, He did come across a little like Q magazine (or maybe Rolling Stone? I've never read it) in human form, with his narrow list of guitar genres throughout the years. And seemed to be avoiding the main issue - he's old. He listens to old music. Some music is not for you. If it is, you would be listening to it, or searching it out. I've got the Weeknd's first few mixtapes, but his lyrics put me off.
It's what my dad's dad probably said to him - "never heard of Aretha Franklin!"
But his take on the idea of a post genre world is as I thought it would be in my previous post. Instead of gatekeepers like Q, Rolling Stone, NME, etc, you now have a plurality of enthusiasts, some genuine, some paid shills. The print journos of yore were like that as well. The online magazines are great. Brooklyn Vegan's top records of the year has neo soul and death metal in it.

i see rick is still doing the old man shouting at clouds thing he does.
as for taylor swift, i know at least one "shake it off" but have heard a lot more that i don't know the name of.
which would probably be the same for madge or whacko in 85
probably much the same as now tbh. they're both remembered for other things really...
