The disregard for the dozen genres that started or solidified in the 80's in favor of the pop of the time... he just immediately loses it. Marking every item of clothing "unique" to Grunge that was lifted from Hardcore Punk, it's just a typical Beato video I can't make all the way through without realizing he hasn't a clue about the subject he's talking about. He's a relatable guy and people gravitate to him, but besides getting interviews with famous 70's rock stars he doesn't do anything at all for me, his takes are ill informed.

I think he makes some valid points, but I’m a little disappointed he didn’t delve into the opposite and equally annoying phenomenon that has also been occurring since the rise of hobbyist musician - the over-genre-fication of music. Ooh, look at me, I only used a clap on 2, instead of 2 and 4, and changed my suboscillator from a sine to a square. It’s a new genre!!!!
I shall dub thee ”Miami Tech Dubstomp” So, it’s not so much that they’ve died as much as they’ve just diluted genre labels to a point that they’re becoming irrelevant.

f**king hell, when I was in California I was in a bar and this American bloke in his late 60s (I reckon) was kicking off a bit as he was asked for his id.vurt wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2024 8:22 pmi doubt any of them have had to show id to buy booze for a long time. even the americans with their draconian alcohol laws.Bunny_boy wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2024 6:41 pmYeah the mean and median ages for his subscribers might be interestingbermudagold wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2024 5:57 pmlol...normally I would agree...but he still can be quite insightful...and with 5 million subscribers, and 5K comments a video, he's not exactly shouting into a vacuumvurt wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2024 1:43 pm i see rick is still doing the old man shouting at clouds thing he does.

at the risk of veering slightly political, i think this fixation on super specific labels might be part of a broader cultural thing. basically i think it's about identity, comfort, and individuality. I think a lot of it is from younger people in particular, just trying to figure out who they are, and who don't really know (couldn't possibly know) the extent of what's already out there. perhaps there's an element of smugness or self-importance too, but i don't think it's a big one.cryophonik wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2024 8:26 pm I think he makes some valid points, but I’m a little disappointed he didn’t delve into the opposite and equally annoying phenomenon that has also been occurring since the rise of hobbyist musician - the over-genre-fication of music. there's at least a bit of a parallel to sexual orientation; for some people, the more "macro" labels are totally suitable, e.g. gay, queer. but for others, they might not feel comfortable putting themselves into a box that doesn't quite fit, almost like wearing the slightly wrong shoe size. and that's how we end up with more and more microlabels, as we come to view things like gender or sexuality as a spectrum.
so if we view music genre as a spectrum, rather than as the extant individual "macro" boxes (jazz, rock, etc), then there can exist an infinite number of subgenres. the words will mean something to someone, even if they mean nothing to others. for better or worse. it's a form of self expression

Oddly enough, there was almost a reverse process with nonbinary gender. There were terms to describe specific "subgenders" (if you will) and some culture-specific terms... but for a lot of people these were all too specific and nothing fit, and it was awkward to talk about in more general terms. When "nonbinary" took hold it had a uniting effect. (Better community, more people finding themselves etc... which also led to some people thinking it's a new fad instead of just a new word for something written about in Sumeria in 2300 BC.)funky lime wrote: Sun Dec 22, 2024 5:59 am there's at least a bit of a parallel to sexual orientation; for some people, the more "macro" labels are totally suitable, e.g. gay, queer. but for others, they might not feel comfortable putting themselves into a box that doesn't quite fit, almost like wearing the slightly wrong shoe size. and that's how we end up with more and more microlabels, as we come to view things like gender or sexuality as a spectrum.
(Some people still do like much more specific labels. I kind of get that, if there's a word that describes you closely and other people also have used it, it might make you feel more valid. What I don't get is inventing a new category for one's very specific personal identity that basically nobody else is going to be a part of, but... okay)
Imagine trying to start a thread on a music forum to talk about "dark progressive psy, goa, alien psy, full on, epic, hands up and Balearic" because nobody had invented the word "trance" yet...
I'm aware of Matmos and "hit em", but that was just a tweet... have any subgenres actually been named by musicians to describe their own work? Or have the terms always been invented by music critics and fans? I know a lot of times musicians hate the labels other people use for their work...

Pete Townsend described their music as "powerpop", which I believe is where the term originates. The terms juke and footwork don't sound like journo terms, likewise grime, hip-hop. Garage and House were used by the clubbers of those venues if not the actual DJs.foosnark wrote: Sun Dec 22, 2024 2:17 pm have any subgenres actually been named by musicians to describe their own work? radio stations do it
there is...
country music
classical
alternative
classic rock
hip hop
etc
makes it easier finding them on the radio dial
college radio station have most of those "genres" on different days
and there is no adverts
and i'm like why would i even bother with any stations that have ads
and youtube seems to have the most ads
and it's hell unless you have a system of avoidance like...
anticipation of incoming ads
closure of eyes, mutage of sound
and some people just use ad blockers
youtube's a.i. is oblivious to my behaviour of
clicking the "skip ad" one second after i see it?
surely, youtube knows by now that i don't want to see ads
but does youtube care?
noooooooooooooooo
no, youtube doesn't care
