Hi All-
I have a p4 2.4mhz (yes, anti-denormalisation low-noise enabled in tracktion)
1gig ram
Radeon 9800 pro vid card
generally a fast-as-crap computer,
with a MOTU 896HD ASIO unit.
Tracktion (1.6.0.1) is f***ing fantastic, but problem is, the cpu usage is way too high, even on the demo tracks - I get some skipping, which never happens on DAWs
like Cubase SX2 or logic.
If I try and insert an EQ effect on one of the demo tracks, things just slow to a crawl - sounds like a machine gun on crack.
Have tried using one of the 'other' anti-denormalisation methods, like the 'normalise' plugin, to no effect-
this is not denormalisation, nor is it buffer settings (changing them has no effect), and the problem exists at
44k as well as at 96k-
other ASIO modes other than the MOTU's own ASIO driver (MOTU ASIO DEVICE) are even worse.
Whats going on?
Any suggestions? (before you write, please be aware that I have _no_ performance issues with *ANY* other applications, including DAWS)
My old box (p3 800mhz, 128MB ram, logic audio 3.6) could handle 10 tracks with 8 effects on each track, I don't see why this should be any different.

I think I found your problem. :hihi:

I don't want to be rash, as I'm sure you know what you're doing with your computer, but I know that Tracktion shouldn't be doing that. Generally, the CPU usage is fantastic. I've used Cubase, and it doesn't compare to Traction. And it's not as fast either.

There has to be SOMETHING that needs to be changed. I'm not quite sure what, but someone here should be able to help you. I run Tracktion on one of my machines that is 1.3ghz CELERON with 320mb RAM and an Audigy card running KX drivers, and I rarely have pops, clicks, or bad CPU usage. Of course, I can overload it, but I run quite a bit on it without problems. I use effects and everythng quite easily. So that's why I'm saying that something must be able to be changed to help you. I hope you get your problem fixed. Let us know.

any edit that uses mda dub-delay on a P4 could easily be denormalising, irrespective of any anti denormalisation fixes that may be in use. That plug denormals internally, and there is not much you can do about it.

Try building your own edit, sans mda plugs and see how you get on. My PC is a chunk slower than yours and I'm happily running edits with numerous instances of vanguard, and even a couple of z3tas without pain.

I also benchmarked Tracktion against FL, and they both crapped at exactly the same place on my pc (98 tracks of muons tau as it happens).

Yes... you found it- I accidentally replaced that old 2.4 Ghz processor with an old XT chip I found in my slipper. jokes aside :)...

Sounds like you're right - tesseract has the highest number of mda plugs and that one cpu's the most out of all of them. Based on my config, what do you think my cpu usages should be for the demo songs?
This is what I'm getting:

You are the light: 50-55%%
Tesseract: 80-100%
Memory Pool: 30-40%
Gard de Nu: 45-50%
Funky Plutonium Moon: 20-30%

Does that sound about right to you, or is it over the mark?
Thanks heaps for all the replies

Just played Tesseract:

cpu% stayed below 50% at all times..

1.4GHz Athlon
512MB DDR RAM

hunt down those rogue plugs!

Tip:

R-click a filter -> "select all other filters of the same type"

You can now mute them all in one go with the "f" key. 8)

(or just press delete..)

Sounds like you have a cheap motherboard. did you get the PC from Best Buy?

... I don't know exactly where you are getting your ideas from, but they're obviously not based on anything I've written. The answers to your assertion and your question are both, quite obviously, negative.

Well, what's your system specs? You posted you have computer problems and don't even post your specs.

I need MB details, ram specifics, hard drive details, if it's a custom or best buy special, etc etc.

btw I also noticed that the initial load - after loading the project without playing the song - is about 15% for each of the songs.
Thanks for your results! I've tried playing from the middle of the songs, no change for me-

If I say it's fast, it is. For your information:
Raptor 74GB
DDR400
top-end gigabyte model with raided sata

Cool-
thanks for that. What kind of soundcard/audio interface do you have?
plus:
which ver windows? (sp2?)
DO you have HT enabled?

Otherwise, looks like theres something wrong, perhaps in my ASIO support for the MOTU? (except that I haven't experienced any problems with it in other apps as
Hmmyet)
