Are you comparing these in terms of sound ? Or presets ? I will agree that Gforce sound designers have made the OB-X a much better deal if you're into presets. ( I own almost everything from Gforce, so I'm a supporter ), but in the case of the Ob-Xtreme3 vs OB-X if you're comparing the raw sound though, I'd have to disagree.mi-os wrote: Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:01 am Sadly there is no comparison between OB-Xtreme and GForce OB-X.
OB-Xtreme3 is extremely close to the original's raw tone and overall sound. You have to remember OB-Xtreme3 doesn't have FX.
Anyways I'm hoping AJ gets the next upcoming new update out soon- he mentioned this month ( January ) he'd have it out. Also he's working on a OB-X to OB-Xtreme3 converter, so we can convert our Hardware OB-X patches into OB-Xtreme3

There seems to be a misunderstanding. I meant there is no audio/video comparing the two. At least i couldn't find anything. I've no idea which is better, just a feeling i may prefer the OB-Xtreme.

They sound and behave quite differently. Biggest example: when I engage Keytracking the G-Force, the higher up the keyboard you go, the MORE open the filter gets. Low notes are pretty much unaffected by keytracking so it's only ever increasing the cutoff. OB-Xtreme: the low notes actually get darker with keytracking engaged as the filter closes more than it's start position for very low notes. Not sure which is more authentic to the hardware. But that one difference can really result in very different experiences.
OB-Xtreme is really lively. The two saturation stages are nice to have. I definitely prefer it to the G-Force from a sound perspective. It's fat and punchy. Both have fairly narrow sweet spots though, as does Obsession, so I think that is just part of the Oberheim experience. The G-force OB-X feels more polished though in terms of the user-experience. Like OB-Xtreme doesn't save Learn assignments with patches and there's no global Learn that just stays in place. That's a big deal for me.

It's worth noting that G-Force OB-X has some sort of output soft saturation happening. I always set the main OB-X volume to about -20dB or less, then compensate with a 3rd party plugin afterwards. This makes it sound a lot better in my opinion. Otherwise it's rather harsh and brash sounding.. and difficult to mix.

I remember seeing a video of someone trying to match a sound between GForce OB-X and an Oberheim Matrix (iirc). Although not the same synth, it was interesting how good the HW sounded especially when he fiddled with envelopes trying to match them (in vain). The HW envelopes resulted in a much more organic/alive/interesting sound. These details are more obvious in direct comparisons.

Any word if this is still going to happen in January Aly ?Aly James wrote: Sun Dec 08, 2024 3:56 amYou have around 200 presets total, V3 factory was mainly here to showcase new v3 capabilities and is pretty scarce indeed, but you will get many additional ones in January during 3.0.1 update once I will be done with VProm 3.0.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Sun Nov 24, 2024 11:00 pmSo I take it this is not the full V3 preset list? I've installed twice and the presets changed but same number.

any OB-Xtreme patches anyone wants to share?
I haven't had much time with it yet, but it's definitely my kind of synth.
pretty good on the CPU too really, considering.
running through the presets does reveal a fairly serious GUI lag though, on m1 macbook. the lag doesn't seem to affect the audio side though luckily.
nice n grumpy, i really like it.

I was just wondering about this the other day when I opened obxtreme and remembered there are still only a dozen or so v3 presets.

Just bought this today.
Installed...
Go to load a preset... and I get a default "Synth Brass" sound.
When I load any preset, I still hear the same synth brass sound.
Widgets seem to change when loading a preset, but the sound remains the same synth brass sound.
Odd to say the least.
