Bitwig Connect 4/12

It's interesting, but it's not for me.
I like the big knob and monitor control, etc. Although, as someone else said, a dedicated controller like Push would be much more exciting.

So yeah this seems like a decent little box, although I moved beyond 4/8 interfaces a decade ago and have no room in my studio for such a small interface. I have an 18i20 gen3 stacked with a 8i6 and Im still short 2 channels. This may be useful to someone, but I cant use it.

I doubt Bitwig themselves made this device, although I could be wrong since I just learned about it. This could be an OEM thing with Bitwig's name on it? I dunno. Audio interfaces are fairly common, but GREAT interfaces are less common. We will see.

I dont see this as really competing with their development time for the software (I think that's what some of the fights are about but my eyes glazed over it all today) because even if this is made entirely in-house it should involve different teams.

Not for me either, but fair play to them. This will be a deal with a hardware manufacturer and won't have cost too much coding time, so I doubt it's taking anything away from anyone.

I wonder if the Bitwig “Control Panel Software”, has to install a whole Java Runtime Environment Disk space: 124 MB for JRE; 2 MB for Java Update Processor? The interface GUI looks very Bitwigish. But they may have just used the images and not used the Java JRE.

I have a list of I think around 30 audio interface “manufacturers” at www.MakeDigitalMedia.com/Music if the Bitwig one isn’t suitable.

For modular this is a big deal. Grid, Modular with this interface seems like a huge win.

Meh I dunno, being able to control my modular with Bitwig isn't something I'd be interested in spending much money to accommodate personally.

I certainly haven't spent any money on it so far...

I’m looking forward to trying one out. Bigwig 5.3 makes it a lot easier for me to use a second interface alongside my main studio I/O, and I’ve been looking for something I can keep on my desk for temporary connections and monitor control. Perhaps my use case isn’t typical but I’m glad that there are options which suite my needs.

Why no ADAT?

Yeah this isn't so great for non Mac users. I've had a Babyface set up for years with ADAT to an old FF800, but just switched to an Aggregate device to get a few more in/outs out of the FF, since I can then use the two ADATs to extend the studio when I want to. The Babyface still uses the big knob to control the main outs etc. etc.

As far as I know Windows is screwed here, and Linux is likely theoretically possible.

No, its pretty good! I dont think its a bad device, and I think for some people it would be a great interface. But, as a Bitwig user who needs hi-z inputs, 32+ish channels, etc, and someone who *desires* even deeper integration, its not for me -- yet.

Edit: and I have CV in/out on numerous other controllers and keyboards.

Just FYI, they have this on the website: "Designed and engineered by Bitwig in Germany."

It surely is a nice, also a bit innovative audio interface for rich people...

But it also means much less development time for the Bitwig DAW. Bitwig has like 20? employees. Ableton has like 999. Steinberg and Presonus, too. So these are not good news. Development is even slower now, and here is another reason for that. That would be ok, if there wasn't that one-year-update timespan... Better would be free updates until next major version. Just like Ableton or Renoise... Bitwig is way too expensive over time.

Yes I'm aware of it on some other controllers like the Arturia ones but not seen it on a consumer audio interface before except for dedicated CV modules for modular systems
