Default theme is fine
software is a tool that allows us to complete a given task.
social media is full of tools that distract us from a given task.

generally i prefer themes where things aren't too fluid (like flat madness) so am surprised how much I'm liking the Default-ish ReaperTips theme. The recent additions allowing customisations I don't think were possible before (separating fx, params and sends to separate columns etc) are a bit of a game changer imo. Silly amount of customisation in the theme adjuster.

I guess it was already mentioned here, but just reminder - FM is a flat-styled theme with it's own theme adjuster that has a lot of variations for TCP and MCP. optimized to use with TCP FX list and Embedded UI's. Extremely easy to use by highly intuitive structure and readable elements. contains 6 different color schemes from bright to dark
what's new?the theme is paid - the whole dollar (or name your price by choosing quantity
- the left column buttons and FX slots have become dark in bright themes
- adjustable TCP/MCP background color, brightness, and saturation.
- extra brightness for the selected track
- two additional color schemes - with colored item background for dark and black versions
- TCP label brightness (unselected)
- quick layout switch in FM4 Adjuster for TCP and MCP
- presets in FM4 adjuster (with save/delete)
- small bugs fixed

P.S. of course I use my own theme because I created it for myself
Horrible really, it looks like a DAW in 1995, Studio One 7 by default looks much better than that. It's a matter of taste.

The NVK theme is amazing. It's the first non-default theme I have used consistently since starting to use Reaper over 15 years ago: https://nvktools.gumroad.com/l/nvk_THEME. It's $19 to use the version with the theme editor or free without, and there's a trial for the paid version included in the free version. Whenever I start up Reaper, I feel 10% happier with this theme. Hope it gets some love from people as it's fairly new.

Reapertips theme is by far the best one in my opinion.

Default and Reapertips are two of the complete ones to me, I always go back to. Most of the custom themes usually have some sort of problem I find, obscure icon, small text, weird text, poor midi visibility, brightness, clashing colors, overlapping, limited mixer track positioning... Even the ones I named previously have sort of these issues except the Peace for me minus it being very grayish and a tad bit bright, although it's a very, very solid one. I'm going to check out some of the choices here to find something more solid.

I've tried dozens of free and paid themes, but LCS_Flat-7 is the only one that has kept me from going back to the default. I've been using it for about a year now, and after just a few small edits and tweaks, it's basically perfect for me.
Reapertips is very well-made with some clever implementation, and I'm happy to throw some money to Alejandro, but I just can't get into actually using the theme. It feels just a bit "over-designed" and I much prefer a flatter, less-busy aesthetic.
Default gets a lot of crap, but for the most part i think it's hard to beat... except for the annoyingly translucent fader caps.

The only thing that matches the amazing versatility of REAPER is its mind-boggling insistence on the most horrible default GUI of any DAW.
I maintain that an additional reason why Pro Tools is still so widely used is that the best software to actually replace it looks unbelievably ugly to any normal person at first glance...
( This is coming from someone who has used REAPER as their main daw for over a decade. )

The first time you ever laid eyes on the REAPER default UI, did you honestly think "wow! This software looks awesome"? If you did, yes, I think you're special. Also, go ahead and let me know which DAW you think looks worse than REAPER?mabian wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 8:38 pmThank you for calling me - and possibly other guys around - Abnormal. I work in education an routinely introduce REAPER to people who have never seen it. Almost everyone from my groups of young adults year after year agree that their first impression of it is that it looks awful.
