So, who has used Receptor live?

I am thinking about getting one to use live. Of course, I'd want to run Sonik Synth 2 on it which has to be tested. (Dan, I'll send you one anyway... for those that don't know, Dan Timis was one of the people who was originally working with me on the GUI of the old, old pre-release version of Sonic Synth! Small world).

Anyway, I was curious to hear from anyone using Receptor live. How'd it go? I am about to do a gig with a bunch of computers which I've never done before. It got me thinking about Receptor some more. Either you go laptops or you go with a rack CPU but I am curious how well it runs without a monitor hooked up. Can you preset all of your sounds and everything to go without the need of a monitor when you are actually ready to play on stage? I would assume yes but I'd like to know more, especially from any user's experience. But, of course, also from Dan or other Muse folks.

Thanks.

Hi Squid!

I'm using RECEPTOR on tour right now.

1. RECEPTOR works very well and is stable.

2. it is absolutely possible to be on stag without a monitor - but personally I think it's easier to work with a monitor.
I created a big setup for the tour => so, no monitor is really needed, as I go step by step to the next MULIT.

3. The most tricky thing is (regarding to live performance): program changes aren't that fluent as you are used by ROMplers etc. It takes quite a long time till the next sound is ready to go.
so, you have to be really careful.
but there are tricks and possibilities to avoid this problem

My gear (keys and racks incl Receptor) is midied to a MIDITEMP processor which makes it very comfortable to access the sounds and organisation generally...

Thanks Robert. Load time on program change is slow even without sample-based stuff? What if it was just some synth patches? I can understand if samples have to be loaded. I guess the best way to do it is to have two Receptors and change one while you play the other.

It really depends on the VSTi.
But still the program change is "dangerous"...

Oh yes, that's one way :)

i'm really glad to hear that ss2 is working on receptor. will ss2 free work as well? i would like to put ss2 thru it's paces before buying it.

FYI: The Reeptor 1.1 update fixed a crashing bug when receieving patches via MIDI.

In v1.0, large multis can have longish load times. It all depends on how many plugins you have in a Multi patch. If for example, you have a Multi patch that uses ten different plugins, Receptor must, obviously, instantiate 10 plugins when the patch is recalled. Fortunately, it does this with a single patch change but, if you think about the PC world, it takes quite a while to instantiate 10 plugins on a PC, too!

That said, v1.1 (and the upcoming 1.2) will definitely improve the loading speed of large multis. We're putting some serious effort into the live performance aspects of Receptor and customers who tend to use the same plugins in numerous Multi patches will see radically faster load times.

The best way (at that moment) is to load e.g. 8 plugins and save them as a multi.
then you mute all plugins except the one you want to play. wanna change the VSTi ? then you simply unmute the desired one and mute the former plugin.
that method works in case you need one plugin only

that's right. still, RECEPTOR has a big plus compared to a PC (regarding Live performace)...

I tried installing Sonik Synth 2 Free onto Receptor with no luck. It reported a 'Registry error'.

What are the steps? Is there a trick to it?

well.. there are quite a lot of freeware VSTis which can't be used with RECEPTOR.

Dave mentions in this thread that SS2 has been tested to run on Receptor. It had me thinking that the demo version would work as well.
