When your wife's shoe boxes are full of external drives which in turn are full of vsts, then maybe you have a problem?

YEah I think we are all guilty of this. I tend to install fewer and fewer things with each DAW reinstall.

I think its the easiest to distinguish between Tools & Toys. Which then also makes it a Bit easier to get rid of some of those unused toys.

With the ever increasing 'sin taxes' in NZ, drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes could easily cost 2 or 3 hundred dollars. Every week. I quit both years ago and spend a fraction of that buying too many plugins that I get enjoyment messing around with. Plus I see it as supporting creative developers. Is 50 bucks a waste of money for 4 hours entertainment...,.......perspective.

I look at it as an investment, most everything I have will have some resale value indefinitely
pretty much.

I can sell if I want, even for cheap I have so much that it should always fetch a worthwhile
amount.

So what do you do when the time comes to get the studio into a newer comp. Do you install back all that you had in the old comp or as I do, just what you have been actually using?

Aside, microsoft set the win 11 technical requirements high enough to force people to buy new computers. Just a way to sell more win 11s.

I have a "studio" and a "home" computer as my mains. The studio one has everything that continues to work on it, use of those is dependant on many temporal factors. The home box is where I download to and I try to keep it to a minimum of sketch/composing tools. It's also where I demo pluggins before deciding on a purchase. But that can get out of hand too, so there's a regular inventory of removals there.
As for MS forcing us into new buys, I've found they are implementing aspects that scan multiples all known to be CPU killers. The number one currently being the Telemetry Compatibility that easily takes up to 70% of the CPU and adds that to Defender's 30% and adds that to your DAW/plugin use. Turning those two off puts CPU usage back down between 8%-25% on that Win10 system.
As far as "hoarding" I do have multiple drives turned into portables mostly filled with sample libraries. Of which I know I probably will not use. But that's the nature of hoarding, the idea that I might use them or find someone that could. If they were physical and not digital, I would have dumped them long ago.
