fgimian wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 2:27 am I haven't tried Tai Chi yet but heard great things about it! I personally feel that Relab's Sonsig Rev-A is one of the best AAR alternatives that I've tried thus far. It has a very rich and somoth modulation like AAR but also has the ability to get super bright and crispy like AAR (which Raum can't do). I find Sonsig Rev-A also has a little more depth than AAR but that's relatively subtle, especially in a mix.

I have used Sonsig in heaps of tracks and am always extremely happy with the result.

However, in saying that, Sonsig Rev-A doesn't offer the level of control AAR did, which is where maybe Tai Chi would be a better long-term fit if it sounds good.

Oh and don't forget ValhallaVintagVerb too, it is a workhorse of a reverb!
I'm trying it out now...very, very good. There's no reason this couldn't be THE go-to reverb for mixing. Very flexible, smooth, and modulate-y.

I don't find it quite as rich as AAR, but I think it's probably a better all-around reverb. I have to test it more, but it's really good.

I forgot that I helped beta-test this sucker...I think I might have missed out on a free licenses, haha. Cheers!
Assuming you find the modulation on AAR to be what makes it rich, try to dial up the modulation to 7 or higher as that adds another voice into the ensemble in Sonsig. AAR always felt very "thick" and dense no matter what I'd do, and indeed Sonsig is more airy by comparison. Personally I feel that this is a pro of Sonsig but that is naturally very subjective depending on what you are looking for.

Sonsig goes on sale for $49 from time to time so even if you didn't snag a license during beta testing (I've beta tested for Relab too funnily enough), it's still pretty cheap to buy.
Thanks for the tip! Relab is a great company, I'd be happy to own this. I'll keep experimenting...

I have totally failed to make Tai Chi sound anything like AAR, especially for huge deep space patches. Am I missing something? Any presets you can point me toward? Right now I'm scratching my head.

I noticed you wrote in a much earlier post that your fav AAR patch was "deep gong long" -- that is absolutely my favorite as well, I've been using it for years and years as my Deep Space reverb send, it's absolutely magical. Tai Chi, so far in my explorations, has nothing even remotely close to that kind of open, spacious, lush, long & deeply modulated sound. If you could point me to a preset or share one of your own that reaches that territory, pleeeease let me know, cheers!

Hey! To be clear: I never heard anything like “Deep Long Gong” in Tai Chi; it just sounded like a really good all-around reverb to me. I’m glad someone else knows the GLORY of that preset!

I have made a couple of decent Deep Long Gong presets in other reverbs. The closest I got was wth NI’ Raum and BLEASS Reverb. I can share those presets when I get home! Cheers.

this is a close starting point. I quickly threw this together on my macbook speakers.
there are plenty of controls on Tai Chi to help make up for the various algorithms of AAR
i hardly got into the nitty gritty, but with a few tweaks we could get the body of this preset closer to the Deep Gong Long preset.
OZ Deepak's Longon.taichi_preset.zip
obviously were never going to replace it exactly, but Tai Chi was my eventual go-to reverb, just as AAR was previously.

Shoot. My Tai Chi license ran out. I'd love to hear an audio example, if you have the time.

Here are my best attempts so far:

1. Original AAR Deep Long Gong
2. BLEASS Reverb
3. NI RAUM

Don't think I got remotely close with anything else. Even RAUM sounds sad, with no way to get that shimmering high end, compared to AAR.

Crystalline can sound pretty great, but always has an early-reflection "slap", even when pre-delay, etc, are set to zero (and ultimately a little thin and more obviously-modulated than Deep Long Gong.)

that's the thing, i didn't even touch the shimmer control in my quick knock-up, but it might add to the patch nicely. When you're dealing with these kind of verbs with various algorithms and controls - i'd say it's not possible to match another verb 100%. They all have their magic, or maybe that's just what i tell myself in order to keep buying new reverbs :P

AAR has 13 different reverb types (the one used in Deep Long Gong is "Fast"), and i'm not sure if they are simply different reverb algorithms or a combination of verb and filter or something similar?

I think before I post an audio example, i'd need to spend some time trying to match it in the studio, not sitting in a factory between a printer and an air-con unit :P Tai Chi is definitely my favourite verb to use. I bought Cinematic Rooms Pro, and it's gorgeous, but i still gravitate more towards Tai Chi, possibly because i'm predominately using synthesisers instead of "real world" instruments.

I'd definitely encourage you to get Tai Chi. If i were cashed up I'd BUY you a flippin copy.
