How is analog better if you lose highs every time you transfer to another take?

Well in that regards digital isn't any better because the more tracks you record it gets a bit muddy due to frequencies clashing.
I notice with songs where I have less tracks, the overall mix has more breathing room (that's without mixing of course).

It isn't the gear you use or how you record, I can tell you that for free.
My solo projects:
Hekkräiser (experimental) | MFG38 (electronic/soundtrack) | The Santtu Pesonen Project (metal/prog)

That and $90.00 for a 15 minute reel to reel. Things were SO expensive. Take Cameras. I wanted a 35mm camera but a roll of film was like $30 and then developing it would cost another $30.00. So, that was $60 for 24 pictures. (At least that's what I remember a roll of film being.)

yeah, the people i know with a full analog setup aren't too worried about money. that's another thing these analog proponents leave out when telling us how much better their way is. looking at the front page of the ~40 most popular compressors on sweetwater, the average price is $2,414... for one compressor. someone could buy a decent computer ($800) with peripherals ($400), audio interface ($200), microphone ($200), midi controller ($200), headphones ($200), and suite of recording software ($400) for that and have a setup that could do quite a lot. especially since, as has been said, it's "not about the sound"

So you didn't watch the video. Why don't you just say so?seafire wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 4:53 pm I watched the video a while back, it's just some nobody reminiscing. Dull stuff.
Feel better yet?

I wish you people would focus and pay attention. I already mentioned that the secret sauce has nothing to do with gear.
How you record is just as important as the moment songwriting occurs. Personally I would prefer to combine the two whenever possible. There's a reason why big bame artists were locked up in luxurious studios where all their carnal needs were met.or how you record
Well thank satan it's free because you didn't tell me shit that did me any good.I can tell you that for free.
If you're on Windows (f**k linux) you gotta spend at least 1500 to 1800 for a serious system.funky lime wrote:someone could buy a decent computer ($800)

As with most of these type videos, he conveniently leaves out things that make his point less compelling. My favorite part is when he discovers his old music that’s good as new… we quickly discover that it is a generic, prog-ish, classic rock jam that should be forgotten.
Ultimately, the point he makes has zero to do with technology, but everything to do with his own poor choices. You don’t have to upgrade your computer every 3 years. You should always back up your work that you think is worth it. Workflow hygiene always important.
So, I’m glad he had his come-to-Jesus moment, but all of that can happen using a computer as well. The biggest thing he leaves out is that analog tape recording was so expensive that most of us couldn’t afford great quality, and if we rented it, we were rushing through things because we constantly knew the clock was ticking.

We? Thank you for speaking for all of us.
Don't get me wrong I don't care for the music but I'm also certain you don't speak for everyone. There are those who woiud buy that shit.
Yes. And he *has to* resort to technological discussions because that's what gets anyone interested and probably the gist of his channel. This thread is a good example of that as the whole discussion leans towards gear and analog versus digital and blah blah blah completely missing a good point.Ultimately, the point he makes has zero to do with technology,
Nobody here has the perspective to observe and listen because they're too caught up in ME ME ME - let "me me me" find fault and make "me me me" look important.
Meanwhile you guys lose an important gem that could make you write music that goes beyond the blip bleep garbage that inundates the internet.
And?? We all made and make choices that may not be 100 percent. He has decided to share it. And as much as I hate most of the garbage youtube channels out there, this vid has a nice gem based on the realization of "poor" choices.everything to do with his own poor choices.
Sure doesn't sound like it. All i hear is stiff, super quantized, auto-pitched cut n paste loopty-loop clip based crap because everyone wants to be a big Spotify seller. So, I’m glad he had his come-to-Jesus moment, but all of that can happen using a computer as well.
It's rare to find modern songwriters that write from the heart because they're too caught up with writing what they THINK will sell on Spotify and get a shitload of YouTube subscriptions.
No coincidence that modern songwriters are instead doing youtube gear-whore channels. It at least pays for gas in the car.
I think any dumb f**k monkey could figure out that analog recording is expensive after him mentioning that reels cost a lot of money. The biggest thing he leaves out is that analog tape recording was so expensive that most of us couldn’t afford great quality, and if we rented it, we were rushing through things because we constantly knew the clock was ticking.
You think an engineer was going to cut down tape costs for an artist or band just because they paid for studio time? Please.

maybe you need a "serious sytem," but i don't. my numbers above are based on what i've got—a windows rig i custom-built that handles everything i need it to handle. hell, i gig with a $500 laptop. i don't mind bouncing stuff once my track count hits the triple digits. gives me more time to take a break, make some tea, and practice. just like the video in your OP says to do with analog.VOODOO U wrote: Fri Apr 11, 2025 5:02 pm If you're on Windows (f**k linux) you gotta spend at least 1500 to 1800 for a serious system.
seems like you've lost the plot a bit if you're letting mid-tier computer specs hold you up from making music. the guy in the video you posted would probably have some words for you about that

Im guessing you don't have an i7 chip in there. Maybe not even an i5.funky lime wrote: Fri Apr 11, 2025 11:08 pm my numbers above are based on what i've got—a windows rig i custom-built
I'll also guess you have max 4GB ram and no solid state drive.
One last guess, you're not using windows10 or 11?
Thats crazy. You must be on Linux? If not you're on an old Windows system? I can't even get a decent calculator for 500 bucks.hell, i gig with a $500 laptop.
No I'm not held up. I just prefer to keep up with the latest as much as possible mainly for perpheral connections. I've got Glyph drives with firewire which is ancient now. No modern computers use FW and Glyph also now focuses on USB and Thunderbolt so.....need to stay on top of it.seems like you've lost the plot a bit if you're letting mid-tier computer specs hold you up from making music.

The funny part about this is that next to no one is going back to tape. It’s a fantasy, like thinking we’re going back to horses for transportation.
I just spent a week on a working cattle ranch that is also a resort for some cowboy cosplay. (Don’t ask, my wife picked it) They did a morning ride out to a lake. It was boring and smelly. A horse almost shit on my daughter. The actual employees took cars and trucks to do actual work and get places.
