Why not? Good enough is, as the name implies, good enough so why not get it out there? But, again, good enough in 2015 was a much lower bar to clear, compared to good enough in 2025. If you're not lifting your standards as your "career" progresses, as technology improves, why even bother any more?

That's why people write new songs. If you spend your whole 'career' going back to old stuff, you are not progressing.

I have a day job, and not as much time to devote to writing music as I would like. One thing I've noticed is that the less time I actually spend working on music, the worse my GAS is. It's almost like a (sad) substitute for actually doing music -- "Oh, I may need that someday, and it's affordable now; I should pick it up just in case." Then, on the few occasions I actually have time to work on something, I realize how ridiculously, stupidly large my toolbox is. It's not like it's paralyzing or anything like that, but I just have too much stuff and not enough time to learn it all.

Still, all it takes to shut down the hoarding urge is actually DOING stuff. That's the only time I am in touch with this fact. I'm old enough to know better, but, well ... there you go.

If your focus Bones really is about the music and you claim, why is having a recording of the actual music not enough?

Why would it be? The recordings are mostly just another tool to give us leverage to get better gigs. When gigs were easily come by - in the 1980s I was playing every week - I had less than no interest in recording but as those opportunities dried up, recording became a good way of promoting the music to get more and better shows. It also keeps old songs alive, even after we've stopped performing them.

All having the MIDI and/or DAW file available does is make it easier for you

That's why people write new songs. If you spend your whole 'career' going back to old stuff, you are not progressing.

Again, you're making it all about yourself, not about the music. If your old songs are any good, why wouldn't you want to keep performing and updating them as you progress? Why would you write them, produce them, release them and then just forget about them? Maybe your older output isn't worth revisiting but we have plenty of old songs that are worth keeping in our pool of live material. We rehearse about 30 songs, which is around twice as many as we'd play in a full set. It gets hard, though, as you write more and more material, to find space for everything that you think deserves to be played.

The reality, though, is that everyone spends time going back to old stuff. Killing Joke always played 3 or 4 songs from their 1980 debut album in their live sets, even though they had 16 albums worth of newer material to draw upon. In fact, the last live show they played, in 2023, only contained songs written before 1981 (first two albums plus a few early singles and b-sides).

I have more than 16,000 but I joined KVR more than 8,000 days ago, so that's an average of just two posts per day.

Again, that's focusing on yourself, not on the music. If you want to get stuff done, make plans and set deadlines.
