I can't find the thing that allows the following "The Select a file to import dialog box even includes a basic file audition function with Auto-play." (from the manual, and my bolding).
I recall there being an obvious ability to do so way back in T6 IIRC.
Can anyone help with making this visible?

The feature you are searching for is part of the Browser pane, there at the bottom.

Yeah, the Browser has lots of preview capabilities. It's worth learning to use all of its uses.
I'm hoping for some improvements here in the next version. It'd be so nice to route MIDI through a track when previewing, or at least making the current preview options less weird. Like setting a plugin for the preview is done through a plugin instance right-click menu and totally invisible to the Browser that plays it and as far as I know the only way to un-set that is to edit the settings file.
