Hi, I'm installing a new PC with w11 Home (with no activation yet because...money).

I want to transfer all of my preciously crafted various MComplete presets to my new PC and thought it would be straightforward to simply copy the w10 folder:

C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\MeldaProduction

...to the same place in w11. But the location is not the same and, well other things I messed up along the way. The whole thing is a bit beyond my horizon.

- How to do it best simply?

Big thanks in advance!

Try this, back up whole folder on the W10 PC C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\MeldaProduction in case something goes wrong. Do not delete this folder.

Copy all folders beggining with "M" from C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\MeldaProduction including their subfolders
and also copy all *.presets files and all *.xml files from C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\MeldaProduction

to the W11 PC to the folder C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\MeldaProduction , user name can be different of course. If this folder does not exist, create it.

Then if you want to try the new V17 download and install MPluginManager and proceed w/ installation. It should merge your old presets. Or download the previous v 16.11 installer and do the installation as before. Good luck:-)

Thanks, I'll try this and see how it goes.

Yep, my presets are there now.

My installation of Win 11 hides the "AppData" folder under my user name, but I just wrote it in the file explorer anyway and got in there. A caveat good to know for someone else trying the same thing.

I messed up folder rights and other things along the way before I understood what went wrong, but I think I'm good to go after a third clean Win 11 install.

Also good, a move like this invites one to clean up in the plugin swamp. I'm throwing out a lot. :)

Thanks again!

Hi Martin, thanks for your input on this question. I'm facing a similar task. Can I ask why you didn't suggest the backup / restore from backup functions? Rather than going into the various folders and copying individual files, wouldn't it be simpler to backup everything on one machine, which (as far as I understand it) creates a single file, then transfer this file to the new machine and then use restore from backup? I daresay I'm missing something, but I'd like to understand what. Thank you again.

Hello, the function of backup all presets is already implemented in every MeldaProduction plugin. You can find it in the caption of preset window ("Backup" and "Restore from backup")

Post

Hi Martin, is that function plugin-specific or does it do a backup of all Melda presets that are in their default location? (In other words, do I have to do it for each plugin individually?)

Post

Not a plugin specific, it does backup and restore for all MeldaProduction plugins. So you do not need to do it for each one individually.

Thank you, Martin. One more question on this. I have some presets that were created on my laptop, some that were created on my desktop. Using the backup/restore function I can copy one set to the other machine, but is there any way to merge the 2 sets?

Thanks.

Yes, the "Restore from backup" does the merge automatically. So if you restore the backup on any machine, it will merge the new presets to the existing ones.

What happens if two presets or folders have the same name?

Thank you! Outstanding functionality.

Great question - they should be merged.

If the target preset file does not exist, it is fully copied. If the target file already exists (i.e., there is a .presets file with the same name) and it also exists in the backup, it is merged. This means all presets inside are checked one by one and merged additively (including folders). New preset folders are created if they don't already exist — the same goes for individual presets.

The only exception I see is if a preset with the same name already exists in the target file with the same name. In that rare case, the preset is overwritten from the backup. The merge module is configured to handle this scenario.

Thanks for the answer Martin!
So if you make changes to default presets, they will be overwritten every time the user imports his own library, and the old presets will always be kept.
I would still prefers a user folder in My Documents for own presets. Cleaner, lighter and safer in most cases. No offense Martin, it's just my opinion ❤
